Breakfast week ended with Ant and Dec
Scott’s week covering Radio 1 Breakfast finished with a particularly strong celebrity judging panel.
Ant and Dec joined the show.
Rather than simply promote their new programme and leave, Scott recruited them into one of his own games:
Brother or Lover.
The contestants were Abbey, a petrol-station manager from Swansea, and Jacob, who worked in retail at Marks & Spencer.
They were either siblings or a couple.
Ant and Dec had to work it out.
The nights out were not especially romantic
Ant asked Abbey how often she and Jacob went out together.
Not that often.
Sometimes for a meal.
Sometimes bowling.
They had been to concerts together.
Nothing about the answer screamed romance.
Dec then asked Jacob whether he had a pet name for Abbey.
Not really.
He sometimes shortened Abbey to:
Abs.
Again, not especially revealing.
Scott pointed out that “Abs” was basically just a shorter version of her actual name.
Jacob would tell Abbey if she looked bad
Ant’s next question was sharper.
If Abbey wore something unflattering, would Jacob tell her?
The answer came quickly:
yes.
It had apparently happened before.
Jacob remembered telling her that a particular dress simply did not suit her.
Abbey accepted that her family tended to be honest.
The answer could point in either direction.
A blunt brother might say it.
So might a long-term partner.
One question changed Ant’s mind
Dec’s final question asked Abbey whether she had met any of Jacob’s exes.
She had not.
This caused immediate doubt.
Ant initially said he thought brother — and then realised he had talked himself into the opposite answer.
If they were siblings, he reasoned, it might be more likely that Abbey would have encountered at least one ex.
At the last second, Ant changed his vote to:
lover.
Dec stayed with:
brother.
Abbey revealed they were lovers
Scott asked the question.
Was Jacob Abbey’s brother or lover?
Lover.
Ant celebrated the late change.
Abbey explained that they had been together for nearly three years.
The lack of pet names and relatively limited nights out had made them sound less couple-like than they really were.
Dec called the exes answer a red herring.
Scott loved that even television’s most experienced presenting duo had been split by the game.
Ant and Dec then explained Limitless Win
The conversation moved to their new ITV quiz Limitless Win.
Ant and Dec explained the central gimmick.
Unlike most quiz shows, there was no fixed maximum jackpot.
Players could keep climbing as long as they continued giving answers which did not go over the correct number.
Scott tried a sample question about the height of an Oscar statuette in centimetres.
His answer was too high.
Game over.
He had survived Brother or Lover only to be eliminated immediately from Ant and Dec’s game.
