23 September 2021: Hook-up Higher or Lower sent Beccy 1,000 miles for a French holiday romance

Kelly Clarkson entered the Christmas rotation

Only a week after Scott broke the seal on Mariah Carey in September, another festive record appeared.

Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You).

Scott immediately believed it had the potential to join the handful of Christmas songs he played every year.

The show already had its own niche seasonal tradition in Magnus Carlson’s *Wrap Myself in Paper*.

Kelly Clarkson might now become another annual fixture.

Chris pointed out that the title sounded less like festive cheer and more like somebody being removed from Christmas entirely.

Scott loved it anyway.

Scott confessed to a 190-mile hook-up journey

The main new game began with a simple question:

what is the furthest distance you have travelled specifically for a hook-up?

Scott went first.

At some point in his life, he had travelled from London to Huddersfield.

Roughly 190 miles.

He could no longer remember the man’s name.

He did remember the man worked at a car showroom.

Chris immediately realised they had a game.

A caller gives the distance.

The next person must be:

higher or lower?

Beccy destroyed Scott’s record

Listener Beccy offered only one biographical clue:

she loved her dog.

Scott, Chris and producer Amy had to decide whether her hook-up journey was higher or lower than Scott’s 190 miles.

All three chose higher.

They were right.

Beccy’s figure was around:

1,000 miles.

She had met a French man while on holiday in Croatia.

They spent an evening salsa dancing.

The holiday ended.

They connected on Facebook.

Then Beccy took what she described as the Croatian equivalent of a Megabus and travelled all the way to Paris to see him again.

The romance became much bigger than one weekend

The story did not end in Paris.

Beccy later moved to Melbourne.

Around nine months afterwards, the man moved to Australia too.

They lived there together for around a year.

Eventually Beccy returned to Britain while he went back to France.

Then COVID made seeing each other extremely difficult and the relationship ended.

Scott loved that a silly distance game had uncovered an entire international relationship.

Sarah still travelled 166 miles for a third date

The next caller, student paramedic Sarah, came in lower than Beccy’s thousand miles but still managed around 166 miles for a third date at army barracks.

Scott and Chris began imagining the awkwardness of arriving through security for a romantic visit.

The feature had barely begun and already ranged from a few miles to international travel.

It was clearly coming back.

The title made the whole thing sound suspiciously wholesome

Hook-up Higher or Lower was technically just a numbers game.

The stories underneath it were much better.

Holiday romances.

Long-distance relationships.

Forgotten men in Huddersfield.

Military barracks.

Scott and Chris had found another feature where one simple question allowed listeners to reveal far more than expected.
