18 November 2020: Naked Attraction’s audio description opened a whole new world of television

Naked Attraction became even more extraordinary with audio description

Greg James had introduced Scott and Chris to a television option they knew existed but had never properly explored.

Audio description.

For blind and partially sighted viewers, a narrator explains important visual information between dialogue.

On many programmes this is practical.

On *Naked Attraction*, it becomes spectacular.

The show replayed Brian’s famous reveal first without the description.

On radio, very little made sense.

Then the audio-described version began.

The narrator carefully explained Brian’s expression and the bodies being revealed, using unexpectedly vivid phrases to paint the visual scene.

Scott and Chris were immediately obsessed.

Listeners explained why the service actually matters

The pair knew it was funny hearing a narrator describe *Naked Attraction*.

They also wanted to avoid treating the service itself as a joke.

Sight-impaired listener Claire messaged to say audio description had allowed her to enjoy television and films she previously could not follow properly.

Scott loved that response.

The programme could laugh at the gloriously descriptive language while also drawing attention to a genuinely useful accessibility feature.

The pair volunteered themselves as future audio describers if television ever needed a slightly less formal style.

Granny Tinder found more reasons to swipe left

Zofia’s grandmother Lynette returned to inspect another set of potential matches.

A 27-year-old cruise-ship entertainer who loved musical theatre and *Magic Mike* raised immediate suspicions.

Lynette was not impressed.

A 24-year-old receptionist described himself as a simple creature with two emotions: hungry and horny.

He was gone even faster.

A 38-year-old farmer did rather better because Lynette respected how hard farmers worked, although every bio continued to be subjected to the same grandmotherly scrutiny.

Zofia’s younger sister India was also mentioned as another possible beneficiary of the service.

Scott liked the idea that Granny Tinder might become a full family agency.

René LaVice became René LaQuiz

Radio 1 drum-and-bass presenter René LaVice joined Don’t Look It Up as guest quizmaster.

The first round was DJ or Drag Queen.

Names such as Olive D’Cox, A Guy Called Gerald and Freaky Flow had to be assigned to the right category.

Scott and Chris did surprisingly well.

Then the quiz moved into drum-and-bass remixes of pop songs.

*Old Town Road* appeared in one remix.

Nelly and Kelly Rowland’s *Dilemma* appeared in another.

The pair were delighted by the versions and immediately began planning a future DJ set where they could pretend to be serious drum-and-bass DJs for approximately ten minutes.

René finished the quiz impressed by how much they actually knew.

For one afternoon, Radio 1’s drum-and-bass specialist had successfully become René LaQuiz.
