10 April 2019: Tradespeople revealed their secret rules

Chris began the show on a secret mission

Chris was not initially in the studio.

He was elsewhere doing something for the programme which he was not allowed to explain.

Scott found the entire arrangement irritating.

If Radio 1 could not say where Chris was or what he was doing, why mention it at all?

Chris could only describe the location as hot and say several other people were there.

The secret would matter later.

For now, Scott had to continue without him.

The shed story had shocked actual tradespeople

Chris had previously mentioned builders doing something he had assumed was normal.

Rather than walking through his house in dirty work clothes to use the toilet, they went behind the shed.

Chris knew what they were doing because they occasionally walked down there carrying toilet roll.

The reaction from listeners was almost unanimous.

This was not an accepted building-industry custom.

Actual tradespeople began contacting the show to explain the rules they really did follow.

Tea mattered

One common theme was drinks.

If somebody was working in your house all day and you made yourself tea or coffee without offering anything, that could create instant dislike.

Tradespeople remembered customers who treated them well and those who acted as though they were invisible.

Scott and Chris began collecting the unwritten etiquette of having builders, plumbers or electricians in the house.

The simplest lesson was not complicated.

Offer a drink.

Let people use the toilet.

Do not assume the shed is an official alternative.

Chris reconsidered years of garden history

The more messages arrived, the more concerned Chris became about the builders who had worked at his house.

He had believed they were being polite by staying outside.

Now he wondered why they had chosen his garden at all.

Listeners joked that the area behind the shed might explain other problems, including wildlife and rats.

Chris said he had no intention of going back there to investigate.

Lizzie prepared for her hen weekend

The programme also checked in with Lizzie, whose hen do was approaching.

Earlier Stark Guides and listener advice had helped prepare other hen parties.

Now Radio 1 wanted honest expectations before Lizzie disappeared for the weekend.

She would return afterwards to review whether the people organising it had actually delivered.
