22 February 2018: James the PI was secretly working at the Brits

The morning after the Brits

Scott and Chris emerged from the Brit Awards in relatively good shape, although Scott had lost his wallet. Chris had also revived his annual tradition of embarrassing Scott on public transport by loudly announcing to a crowded Tube carriage that “Scott Mills” was travelling among ordinary people just like everybody else.

Scott’s embarrassment was visible enough that his neck turned red in the video. Chris considered the ritual an essential part of Brit Awards night.

The Breakfast Show also replayed one of the ceremony’s unexpected stars: Este Haim, who had appeared behind Cheryl and Liam Payne during Jack Whitehall’s interview and repeatedly gestured toward the camera. Some newspapers had referred to her simply as a mystery drunk woman, so Este later left Cheryl an apologetic answerphone message explaining who she was and insisting there was “no beef”.

Thursday became Spidey

James the private investigator moved from Friday to Thursday because Maya Jama was joining the Radio 1 weekend line-up. James accepted the new slot while Scott jokingly described the move away from Friday as a slight demotion.

Then James revealed where he had been the previous evening: working at the Brit Awards. His own social media had strongly hinted at it, although he refused to say whom he had been following or who had hired him.

James explained some of the lengths private investigators can go to in hotels. Teams may book relatively expensive rooms to gain access to guest areas. In previous investigations they had even engineered room moves by posing as hotel staff, claiming there was a problem such as plumbing or a smoke detector and arranging for the target to be moved into a room adjoining one occupied by the investigators.

That would allow surveillance from the other side of the connecting wall or door. Scott and Chris were fascinated, while James made it clear that no amount of questioning would reveal the identity of the person he had been watching at the Brits.

For a few minutes, Creme Eggs had apparently changed name

The programme revisited brands and products people may have been pronouncing incorrectly. A social-media post from the company behind Creme Eggs appeared to suggest the word should be pronounced “crem” rather than “cream”.

Scott and Chris refused to accept that decades of advertising and ordinary usage could simply be overturned. They tried saying “crem egg” out loud and decided it sounded completely wrong.

Relief arrived when it became clear that the social-media account had made a mistake. “Creme Egg” could continue to be pronounced exactly as everybody already pronounced it, and a surprisingly large national crisis was averted.

A listener proved the letting-agent confession was not hypothetical

Josh had heard the earlier anonymous letting agent explain that staff with keys sometimes use empty properties for their own purposes. He rang to say something strikingly similar had happened in his shared rented home.

A room in the property was vacant and the letting agent had access for viewings. According to Josh, the agent arrived at around four in the morning with two women after a night out and used the empty room.

The irony was that the tenants’ own house rules prohibited overnight guests. Josh also said the agent had once tried the wrong bedroom first, disturbing a flatmate, and had previously arrived early on a Sunday to repair a window while Josh was not properly dressed.

By this point Scott and Chris were less interested in whether the original “Hugo” confession was believable. They now had a listener describing an almost textbook example of exactly the same behaviour.
