25 October 2017: Liam Payne’s dad chose Rage Against the Machine on Bangers

Liam Payne’s dad became the show’s pop-star dad

Scott and Chris had increasingly enjoyed speaking to the parents of famous musicians, and Liam Payne’s dad Geoff joined them for Bangers.

Scott made an unusually aggressive choice with Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name”.

Geoff approved.

His vote gave Scott the point and prompted the presenters to adopt him as their unofficial “show pop-star dad”.

The fact that Liam Payne’s father had just chosen Rage Against the Machine over Chris’s offering only made the result more satisfying for Scott.

Ghostbusters was born

Listener Nicole had been speaking to a man she met through a dating app and arranged to see him.

Then he disappeared.

Weeks later he resurfaced with an elaborate explanation: his phone had broken, he had eventually recovered her number through his mobile-phone records and he wanted another chance.

Nicole agreed to arrange another date.

He failed to turn up again.

Scott and Chris decided simple sympathy was no longer enough. They wanted to call people who had ghosted listeners and ask what had actually happened.

The new feature was named Ghostbusters.

They tried ringing Nicole’s missing date, but he did not answer, meaning the show’s first ghost remained appropriately difficult to locate.

Boss Chicken targeted the head of production

Boss Chicken also returned despite the obvious danger of the game.

This time Scott and Chris called Rebecca, the head of production across Radio 1, 1Xtra and the Asian Network.

They had recently discussed podcast ideas with her, so the forbidden phrase became: “I don’t want to do your stupid podcast.”

The call landed on Chris.

He delivered the line even though both presenters genuinely liked the ideas they had been discussing with Rebecca.

They ended the call unsure whether a radio feature had just damaged their careers.
