Marshmello kept the helmet on and stayed silent
Marshmello came into Radio 1 after appearing at the Teen Awards, but Scott and Chris faced an obvious interview problem: his public character did not speak.
Rather than abandon the conversation, Marshmello typed his answers while Chris put them through a text-to-speech voice.
That allowed Scott and Chris to ask the sort of questions they had always wanted answered, including the practicalities of dating while wearing the famous marshmallow helmet.
The synthetic voice made even ordinary answers sound strangely formal, which only encouraged them to keep pushing the format.
Scott considered a pet that was actually a cushion
Scott was also investigating whether he could enjoy some of the benefits of having a pet without actually taking on a living animal.
He had found a cushion-like product designed to mimic some aspects of pet ownership, including a moving or wagging tail and vibrations.
The appeal was obvious for people who could not keep animals because of allergies, accommodation rules or the practical commitment involved, although Chris was less convinced that a moving cushion could ever properly substitute for a real pet.
Radio 1 recovered from the Teen Awards
The programme looked back at the previous day’s Radio 1 Teen Awards and the organised chaos around performers, dressing rooms and backstage labels.
Scott and Chris were particularly entertained by the way spaces could be reassigned and relabelled as different stars moved through the building, leaving the presenters surrounded by evidence of much more glamorous occupants.
