Robot Wars requires an apology
Scott and Chris return from Glasgow unable to reveal whether they won their Robot Wars battle, but able to admit that filming ended with a formal apology. Scott controlled the weapon, Chris helped drive and Dangerous Dave handled the machinery until an incident left something so badly damaged that a JCB had to remove it.
They stress that the damage was not intended and apologise to the engineers and production staff whose carefully built machines still had weeks of filming ahead. The episode is due to air on 28 December, leaving listeners to wait for the result and discover exactly what required the heavy lifting equipment.
Scott works hard at meeting the mums
Chris reveals that his girlfriend’s mum has invited Scott for Christmas and recently received a present from him. Scott accepts that he is unusually good with mothers and explains his method: because parents hear “DJ” and imagine clubs, late nights and bad behaviour, he becomes exceptionally polite, asks questions and makes them feel that their child is safe.
Listeners recognise the tactic. Matt pretended to be fascinated by an ex-girlfriend’s mum’s bowls hobby, while Gemma researched a friend’s mother’s foster animals before visiting. Scott decides that careful preparation and mirroring an interest are legitimate ways to survive the seasonal meeting of the parents.
The worst Christmas rap is found
The programme investigates an obscure festive record called “Gift Wrap” by the Youth Singers of Calgary. The title promises a Christmas rap about wrapping presents, but the earnest performance and increasingly literal lyrics make it an extraordinary seasonal discovery.
The Whooovent Calendar also returns after Alice Levine opens the weekend doors. Scott enjoys not knowing what will appear behind each one, while Chris’s rough voice continues despite a weekend spent steaming his head over a bowl in an attempt to fight off his cold.
