Cardiff orders a much smaller tree
Cardiff Castle’s main Christmas tree was announced as 40 metres tall but turns out to be 40 feet. Against the castle it resembles a Ferrero Rocher ornament, and nearby reindeer appear disproportionately large.
Listener John has seen it in person and confirms that the tree is pleasant but hardly an enormous city landmark. Scott calculates that a genuine 40-metre tree would stand close to the height of the Statue of Liberty, making the original promise implausible as well as incorrect.
Rinder survives the dance-off
Judge Rinder reaches Strictly Come Dancing‘s final five after facing the dance-off. He insists he rather enjoyed performing again and trusted the dance, although Scott found the result considerably more stressful.
The elimination of Ed Balls and Honey G during the same weekend leaves two enormous gaps in Saturday-night entertainment. Rinder promises that whenever he finally leaves the competition he will visit Radio 1, recreate his foxtrot with Chris and perform a proper Bamboleo.
Christmas can wait no longer
Listeners divide over whether Christmas music should begin before 1 December. A pharmacy student reminds Scott that Magnus Carlsson Day, prompted by the line “It’s Christmas in a week and a day”, falls on Saturday 17 December when the programme will not be on air.
Scott responds by playing “Wrap Myself in Paper” immediately, despite it being nowhere near a week and a day before Christmas. Student Darren also prepares for a £5 meet-and-greet with Steve McFadden at a Manchester club, and the programme helps him plan small talk with Phil Mitchell while Chris chooses a Banger by phone from Edinburgh Airport.
