4 July 2016: Alan Shearer sends Scott and Chris to the Euro semi-final

The poll produces an unexpected result

Nearly 10,000 people vote in a Twitter poll on whether Scott and Chris should be allowed to commentate on a Euro 2016 match, and 93 per cent say yes. Scott still treats the idea as a joke that has gone too far, while Chris is already preparing as though a major broadcasting career has begun.

Alan Shearer calls from Paris with the decisive news: the BBC has agreed to put the pair on the Red Button for Thursday’s France versus Germany semi-final. He says he has sorted the opportunity after their original request, leaving Scott alarmed by the practicalities and Chris delighted. They immediately begin worrying about forms, travel, tactics and how much football knowledge they can acquire before kick-off.

A Tinder date comes with an interviewer

Listener Chris recounts a coffee date with a 26-year-old woman who unexpectedly arrives with her father. The father takes over the conversation and questions him about his work, income and plans for the future for roughly ten minutes. Feeling trapped in an impromptu job interview, Chris excuses himself to use the toilet, spots a fire exit and escapes across the car park while both of them watch him leave.

Scott and Chris also debate whether pizza and coffee belong together. Chris sees nothing wrong with the combination, but the responses from listeners make clear that most people regard it as distinctly odd.

Scott takes the first Bangers point

Stefan chooses between Chris’s nomination, Swedish House Mafia and Knife Party’s “Antidote”, and Scott’s choice, Nero’s “Promises”. He gives the point to Scott, who starts the week 1–0 ahead. The victory is small compared with the news from Paris, but it provides Scott with one reassuring result before the pair attempt live international football commentary.
