11 January 2016: A lilo anchor faces Deborah Meaden on Instant Dragons’ Den

Back to afternoons

Scott and Chris returned to their usual afternoon programme after two weeks covering Breakfast. Scott had appeared on Matt Edmondson’s Initial Reaction over the weekend and was still frustrated that he had failed to produce Ryan Lewis when given the initials R.L.

They also confronted a problem created by social media enthusiasm. Eleven days into January, everything from a television audition to Craig David’s Live Lounge cover was already being declared “the best thing of 2016”. Scott decided everybody should receive one golden-buzzer-style opportunity to make the claim, after which they would be forbidden from using it again for the rest of the year.

Listener Sophie immediately spent her only choice on Chris’s unsuccessful Shower-oke experiment. She said his lonely singing had made her pull over because she was laughing so much, and accepted that even weddings and major family events later in the year could not replace it.

The lilo anchor

Josh entered Instant Dragons’ Den with a solution to drifting away from a sunbed while floating on a lilo. His portable anchor would be a bag filled with beach sand and tied to the inflatable, avoiding the suitcase problems presented by carrying a conventional metal anchor.

Deborah Meaden asked how many people genuinely needed the product and pointed out that a concerned holidaymaker could simply use an ordinary sock. Josh argued that this would create a wet, sandy sock, but Deborah remained unconvinced and declined to invest.

A listener with a jet ski then revealed that sand anchors already existed. Scott and Chris concluded that almost every apparently world-changing invention had already been attempted, although Josh at least succeeded in making Deborah laugh.
