GCSE results morning
Breakfast accompanied listeners waiting for GCSE results. Scott recognised the newspaper ritual of successful pupils jumping into the air with sheets of paper, while messages arrived from teenagers who had been awake for hours worrying about the envelopes.
The programme insisted that the morning would not define an entire life, but accepted that reassurance felt much easier from the other side of the results. A BBC One announcer’s phone vibrating through a link into Bake Off supplied useful evidence that even carefully prepared professionals had embarrassing live moments.
Luke Hemmings from the road
Luke Hemmings joined from 5 Seconds of Summer’s extensive tour. The conversation covered the strange details of life spent moving between venues, including over-helpful self-flushing toilets and the exhaustion that could leave somebody asleep beside, or in, their food.
Scott avoided telling Luke that the repeated backing vocal in She’s Kinda Hot had started to irritate some Breakfast listeners. Instead, they discussed the band’s new album Sounds Good Feels Good, the certainty of arriving at full arenas and the contrast with Scott’s memories of DJ appearances where nobody could guarantee a crowd.
Luke also spoke to listeners receiving GCSE results, from a position in which touring and recording had long since replaced an ordinary school timetable.
The best secret Bake Off yet
Scott sent Chris to a particularly smart bakery for another uninvited Paul Hollywood inspection. Chris initially became distracted by the surrounding shops and took a wrong turn, forcing Scott to direct him back towards the cake.
This time simply discussing crumb and crust was not enough. Scott ordered Chris to make his assessment, then put his whole face into the cake. Chris protested that Paul Hollywood did not do that, but Scott pointed out that Chris was not Paul Hollywood and that face-planting food was funny.
The first impact left the staff staring. Chris repeated it, and the bakery finally broke into laughter as customers began filming. He returned with cake across his face and earned a rare round of applause from Scott.
The escalation brought the feature to its natural peak. There was little left for a future inspection once Chris had examined a cake from the inside with his face.
