Bamboleo and a new instrument
Breakfast reached Wednesday, giving Scott and Chris the first Bamboleo of their early-morning run. Chris decided that the show’s theme needed live brass and announced an ambition to learn the trumpet, eventually imagining himself playing OMI’s Cheerleader or joining Scott at DJ appearances like a member of Rudimental.
Scott proposed beginning with a toy instrument. Chris’s confidence was already far ahead of his ability, but the idea created the week’s new continuing challenge.
Dan Smith calls from Sydney
Dan Smith from Bastille joined from Australia, where one of his best friends and regular producers was getting married. Dan had been asked to sing a Frank Ocean song, an assignment he found much harder than performing his own material.
He admitted that Bastille had become a wedding band before, playing covers at his sister’s celebration. The call also launched a Reading and Leeds Festival competition offering the winner the chance to watch the band from the side of the stage. Dan supplied the registration question before Scott explained the exact phrase callers would need if Radio 1 rang them back.
Thirty seconds to get dressed
Listener Amy took too long deciding what to wear, so Scott and Chris imposed the method they used during Breakfast weeks: choose clothes without looking and leave the house before doubt could begin.
With her eyes closed, Amy reached into the wardrobe and selected a black funeral dress. A second blind choice produced black combat-style boots, and the first available accessory was a broken white watch. Scott declared the result “funeral chic” and sent her to work.
The experiment did save time. It also left Amy explaining to customers why she had arrived in such a formal outfit, although the photograph looked coordinated enough that nobody would have guessed it had taken less than a minute.
No more Kardashians
American news presenter John Brown finally refused to discuss another Kardashian story. When colleagues introduced an item about Kylie Jenner naming a rabbit Bruce, he walked off the set while his microphone remained live and repeatedly insisted that nobody cared.
Scott understood the frustration and warned that a similarly minor celebrity story might one day send him over the edge. The only mystery was which harmless showbiz item would eventually do it.
