Coffee through a straw
Scott arrived with newly whitened teeth and drank coffee through a straw to protect them, adopting what he considered a Mariah Carey level of sophistication. The swollen bite or rash on his forehead remained much harder to disguise, despite antihistamine cream and an increasingly strategic fringe.
Wednesday also brought the Breakfast version of Bamboleo Wednesday. Scott worried that the feature might be too jazzy before 9am, but listeners revising and travelling to work wanted the familiar marker that half the week had gone.
The Great Belldini
Children’s entertainer Lee Bell played Real or No Real under his professional name, the Great Belldini. Scott became more interested in the name than the act, particularly after learning that Belldini’s friends had ordinary names rather than matching show-business identities.
The facts included BBC Four’s uninterrupted two-hour canal journey, which was real, and a supposed Trevor Nelson rider containing an eye mask and earplugs for pre-set naps, which was not. Scott won 20 points to the Great Belldini’s 10.
Questions from Shane Richie
Rixton visited to discuss their single “We All Want the Same”. Scott had prepared by texting Jake Roche’s father, Shane Richie, for questions and possible gossip.
The band discussed a photograph in which all four members appeared to be showering together. Jake confirmed that they had genuinely been naked, describing communal washing as a practical response to travelling and tight schedules rather than a carefully arranged picture.
Shane had also offered Scott a band free of charge if there happened to be a wedding the following year. Scott treated that as evidence of an imminent announcement, but Jake repeatedly denied that he was getting married and suggested that communication with his father was not especially strong.
Back to the basement
Scott still refused to accept Chris arriving without a shower, so he sent him back downstairs for a second morning of shower karaoke. Chris admitted that he regarded soap as largely decorative and would happily stand under water without it.
While Chris was naked, Scott arranged for somebody to remove his clothes. The showers suddenly felt much busier, nobody nearby would answer him, and he considered remaining in the cubicle for the rest of the programme rather than search for his belongings in public.
