Scott’s shirt is also a babygrow
Dev covered the programme while Scott prepared for Sunday’s Strictly Come Dancing launch show. Scott called from his dressing room and explained that his smart ballroom shirt continued below the waist like a babygrow.
The design stopped the shirt riding up during a dance. It also meant stepping into it and accepting help when it was time to escape. Scott had already been trapped in one costume and discovered that rapid changes involved three people descending on him like a Formula One pit crew.
Velvet over the top
Scott had spent part of the day in a dressing gown, then moved into the all-in-one shirt and eventually added velvet. Episodes of another programme were apparently being recorded nearby, but he was not prepared to introduce himself while dressed like an unusually formal baby.
He asked Dev for more Dev and more music on the radio. He had also left the speech jammer connected in the studio, giving his replacement a much less comfortable assignment.
Dev reads the Strictly cast
The jammer fed Dev’s voice back into his headphones after a short delay. Simply reading the list of Strictly contestants became slow and difficult, but Scott decided that a live conversation would expose its effects much more effectively.
Frankie Bridge from The Saturdays was in the dressing room next door. Scott went to find her and asked whether she would speak to Radio 1 about her own launch preparations, without explaining what Dev was hearing.
Frankie refuses to be rude
Dev asked about the group dance, costumes and potential partners while fighting the delay. Frankie said the first full run had made her feel as though she might be sick, and that she wanted a professional who would be fun rather than constantly telling her off.
She noticed that Dev sounded slightly unusual but remained exceptionally polite. Only after he revealed the speech jammer did she admit anything was wrong. Once the call ended, Frankie asked Scott what had happened to his voice; Scott told her that years of early starts had made Dev sound like that permanently.
