From Britain’s Got Talent to the Bingo queue
Collabro arrived only days after winning Britain’s Got Talent. The musical-theatre group could not reveal details of the deals being discussed, but said the exposure and Simon Cowell’s standing ovation had created immediate interest. Chris, a recent convert to Les Misérables, asked to join them and was briefly allowed to begin “One Day More” before the five professional voices took over.
With Tom, Jamie, Matt, Richard and Michael all present, the usual two-player Innuendo Bingo format became a queue. Each member stepped forward in turn, filled his mouth with water and sprayed Chris. Clips came from Emmerdale, Lewis Hamilton at the Canadian Grand Prix, Dickinson’s Real Deal, Chris Packham on Springwatch, a dangerous-roads programme, Emeli Sandé and Magic’s breakfast show.
The rest of Collabro stood close enough to be caught in the crossfire. Chris received all five direct hits and several of the group returned for a second turn, making it a particularly wet initiation into Radio 1. They left to continue record-contract discussions after receiving a set of high fives from their soaked opponent.
Scott’s record reaches a chart-sized total
The download window for “Hearts Upon Our Sleeve” had closed. Its video was approaching half a million views, while the free audio had been downloaded 57,023 times. Scott compared that with the 57,090 copies Sam Smith had sold to reach number two in the UK chart the previous week. The figures were global and the free track was not chart-eligible, but the proximity gave the project a satisfying final statistic.
The campaign to replace Jennifer Lopez in Brazil had made less progress. FIFA had not replied and Ashton Irwin’s spandex condition sounded like a polite refusal. Scott still believed an opening ceremony with 5 Seconds of Summer would be better than leaving Pitbull alone, but the practical window was closing.
Accents threaten the commentary
David Beckham’s television trip to the Amazon supplied Scott with a beginner’s explanation of football: two teams of 11 had to kick the ball into the other side’s goal. Scott considered keeping the clip nearby during Friday’s alternative commentary.
His larger concern was involuntarily copying accents. Joey Barton’s French-inflected press conference and Steve McClaren’s Dutch interview demonstrated how easily an English speaker could change voice abroad. A Spanish episode of MasterChef made the problem stranger by using English-language voiceovers delivered in Spanish accents. Scott feared that hearing players, managers and commentators during Spain v Netherlands would push him into a performance of his own.
Fuse ODG follows Scott
Scott was delighted to discover that Fuse ODG genuinely followed him on Twitter. He was accustomed to notifications from fans impersonating One Direction, Diana Vickers and other artists, so the verified account felt unusually rewarding. Chris was jealous, especially after both presenters had recently met the singer.
The discovery led them to Fuse ODG’s “Dangerous Love” video, filmed on streets they used around Radio 1. Scott wondered why he never encountered the full dance routine on his walk to work if the artist was supposedly following him.
Charlie Sloth’s Gran Canaria Fact Tuesday
Charlie Sloth joined Real or No Real, bringing back the deliberately misplaced “Gran Canaria Fact Tuesday” identity. Helena Bonham Carter really had pushed her wand into Matthew Lewis’s ear during a Harry Potter shoot and damaged his eardrum. MNEK had not kept wearing a London 2012 Games Maker watch on stage.
A women’s hockey match really had restarted while one team was late returning from half-time, allowing South Korea to play briefly against no opposition. Sir Elton John had not been the first person to ride an escalator in Wales. Charlie won comfortably, despite Scott and Chris being more interested in his jewellery, his abandoned diet and whether his club appearances resembled meeting a gold-covered Father Christmas.
