A football transfer opportunity
Radio 1’s football rematch against an Olly Murs side was approaching at Wembley in December, and Chris was desperate to be involved. The problem was that the Radio 1 Wanderers did not appear equally desperate to select him.
With Olly in the studio, Chris saw another route onto the pitch. If Radio 1 did not want him, could he play for Olly instead? Olly agreed live on air, creating a wonderfully awkward transfer possibility before anybody responsible for either squad had approved it.
Olly catches up
Olly had recently been in Australia and came in with his usual energy. Conversation moved through X Factor, his online interactions and James Arthur’s recent controversy. Olly was careful not to defend a homophobic remark and said he hoped the apology was genuine.
Then the conversation became musical. Olly demonstrated that he could perform Flo Rida’s rap from his own “Troublemaker”, and followed it with the rap from Peter Andre’s “Mysterious Girl”. A story about karaoke in Brisbane helped establish that this was not a skill he had learned solely for the Radio 1 studio.
Chris misunderstands the dress code
For Innuendo Bingo, Olly stripped down to his boxer shorts because he had an album signing later and did not want to soak his clothes. Chris saw what was happening and removed his own trousers too.
Only then did Olly put on a protective mac. Chris realised he had enthusiastically taken his trousers off without actually needing to, which gave Scott a laugh before the first clip had even played.
The round included Jonathan Agnew talking about blowing on Billy’s trumpet, a seal tugging on equipment, somebody having a “load of seed in your mouth”, Sophie Raworth discussing a “five hour semi” and several more contributions from Fearne Cotton, Gemma Cairney, Paul Hollywood and regional radio.
Olly loved it. The studio was soaked, Chris was underdressed and the video was ready to give listeners the part that radio could only describe.
Singing soaps and planning a ski trip
The wider Radio 1 effort to get Britain singing collided with the week’s soap theme, producing a basic problem: most soap theme tunes do not have lyrics. Coronation Street, Home and Away and the rest nevertheless became part of the discussion as the station continued its television takeover.
Watching Snow, Sex & Suspicious Parents also prompted the idea of a skiing trip involving Scott, Chris and Charlie Sloth. Scott’s contribution would be much more likely to happen at après-ski than on an actual slope.
Charlie later arrived for Real or No Real and discussed everything from branded dressing gowns to unlikely celebrity facts. Katherine Jenkins sleeping with her eyes open was judged real, and Mexico’s place in an obesity statistic also proved real. It was a suitably broad end to a day that had already transferred Chris between football teams and removed his trousers unnecessarily.
