Rough Copy return as curse-breakers
Chris was back from Amsterdam and the MTV EMAs, but Scott first had some successful unfinished business to celebrate. Rough Copy had accepted the Mills endorsement, survived X Factor and returned to Radio 1 with the curse officially broken.
Sterling, Joey and Kaz talked about Big Band Week, the X Factor house and having Gary Barlow behind them. They also had Children in Need commitments ahead. Their survival meant Scott could finally stop treating every public show of support as an immediate threat to somebody’s television career.
Kaz takes the water
Rough Copy had also promised to do Innuendo Bingo. Kaz took the seat opposite Chris while Sterling and Joey stayed nearby, dancing and encouraging him through the ordeal.
The clips included The Chase offering to “polish you off”, Radio 4 discussing “taste my meat”, an “enormously big handle” from football, a Boris-related line, bird-box instructions involving a bottom hole and Vicky Pattison describing being “pulled me off in a stretcher”. Paul Hollywood and other regular sources supplied further ammunition.
By the end Kaz was drenched and his bandmates had enjoyed the spectacle from a safer position. Rough Copy had managed two Radio 1 challenges in a matter of days: first surviving Scott’s backing, then surviving the water.
Chris comes back from Amsterdam
Chris’s trip to Amsterdam for the EMAs had left Scott with questions about what had happened away from the microphone. Chris talked about the city’s chips and mayonnaise, and about the much less relaxing business of trying to negotiate trams and bicycles.
The trip also prompted a discussion of how celebrities leave premieres and awards shows. Scott explained that glamorous exits can be surprisingly unglamorous, with famous guests sometimes disappearing through kitchens and service areas rather than making another grand trip down the carpet.
Fernando worries about Christmas presents
Chris’s alter ego Fernando was back to complain about the problems created by Christmas shopping. The fear was that anything he happened to look at could be interpreted by his girlfriend as a request and then reappear as a present weeks later.
Listeners were increasingly forgetting the fiction and texting Chris as if the complaints were straightforwardly his own. Scott was happy to keep reminding him that whatever embarrassing domestic detail had just been broadcast belonged, officially at least, to Fernando.
Charlie Sloth returns with a song
After walking out the previous week, Charlie Sloth came back with plans. He and Big Narstie were working on a track called “Fat Is Great”, and Charlie proposed making his birthday, 20 August, a National Fat Day. He also attempted to negotiate three Krispy Kreme doughnuts every Friday and wanted the forthcoming track treated as a major Radio 1 record.
Real or No Real supplied more claims, including Rihanna having a day named after her in Barbados and Kevin Spacey’s brother working as a Rod Stewart impersonator. Charlie also talked proudly about his new house and his enthusiasm for enormous food. The flounce had clearly not ended the relationship with the show.
