Natalie calls Chris and One Direction’s US fans cause a stir

Scott was covering Nick Grimshaw on Breakfast when Natalie introduced the programme. Her first story was about getting stuck in a school bin, but the call soon became about her and her friends’ affection for Chris, whose old Innuendo Bingo appearance in a pub had become a favourite YouTube watch.

Chris went visibly red as Natalie explained that they listened to 24 Years at the Tap End and followed the show closely. The three presenters then recorded a message for Natalie’s voicemail, including a specially requested greeting for her friend Stella.

The programme noted that Radio 1 had begun putting longer Innuendo Bingo compilations on YouTube, making the feature easier for fans like Natalie to revisit. The team remained slightly surprised by the amount of enthusiasm its older, wetter episodes could still generate.

One Direction’s American success was another major topic after the band’s Radio 1 special brought UK and US fans into a noisy Twitter argument. Scott played clips from American fans, then tried to calm the reaction to Louis Tomlinson saying it was surreal to have a number-one album in the US when they had not achieved the same result at home.

Scott also rejected the idea, pushed by fans online, that he should manage the group. Chris pointed out that Scott’s timekeeping and organisation would make him a disastrous fit, while Scott conceded that he might be loyal but would probably miss the important flight.
