Australia Day goes wrong, Chris joins the Cubs and Jeremy Kyle provides the quiz
After Ed confessed that he had accidentally high-fived his driving instructor while the man was signalling to traffic, the team marked Australia Day with similarly clumsy results. Their plan had involved chicken salt, Tim Tams and a kangaroo burger, but the shopping effort had not delivered much of it.
Chris returned with food that was only loosely Australian, including a standard burger with pineapple and some vegetables. The team apologised to Australian listeners for what had become the least convincing Australia Day gathering imaginable, while Chris was left to face the proposed kangaroo tasting.
The Post Radio 4 Lady brought Scott an email from someone on “the internet”, apparently eager to know what kind of man he was. It also revived the “Go on, pigs” catchphrase when a listener named a car Neil after the pig farmer, showing how firmly the line had lodged in the audience’s vocabulary.
For 24 Years at the Tap End, Chris went back to his tenth year and his time in the Cubs. He remembered collecting badges, becoming a sixer, camps and a variety-show appearance as Hyacinth Bucket, a role he now viewed with more embarrassment than pride.
The show finished with a Jeremy Kyle guessing game, in which the team tried to predict the presenter’s next question from short clips. Chris’s oddly confident answer that someone had “pretended to be your dad” was correct, giving a much-needed success to a day in which the Australia Day celebrations had otherwise been a washout.
