Scott launches his Radio 1 Movie awards campaign

Covering the Breakfast Show for Grimmy, Scott began December by admiring Beccy’s Christmas jumper, then noticing that two drops of gravy had made it look as though one of its reindeer had had an accident. The festive outfit was only a day early, Beccy maintained, but its lunch-related damage was already beyond saving.

The much more pressing business was the Radio 1 Movie, due to premiere online the following Wednesday. A media-studies teacher called Sam offered to make the screening an educational event for his students, promising posters, popcorn and an enforced 7pm viewing. In return, Scott found him a suitably important-sounding credit: Dolly Grip.

Scott then appealed for listener-designed posters, setting out the vital information, the film title, the website and the premiere time, while Beccy supplied an example. The campaign was becoming surprisingly ambitious for a project Scott cheerfully admitted was not yet finished.

Film critic Rhianna joined them to discuss the sort of promotion a major release required. Scott claimed a cast including Lady Gaga, Nicole Scherzinger, Foo Fighters, listeners and, crucially, “Tarantino”, before explaining that this meant Norman Tarantino of Pennsylvania, who thought he might be Quentin’s cousin.

Rhianna’s talk of Cannes and Sundance gave Scott a better idea. Carlisle could host its own international festival on premiere night, with one entry, the Radio 1 Movie, and therefore one inevitable winner. Scott was immediately planning cheap trophies, an engraved shield and posters declaring the film award-winning.
