Chris becomes a film critic and Beccy books “Tarantino”
Scott was still attempting to contain the fallout from his Dubai CD cover comparison, having gone from saying Hussein Al Jassimi looked exactly like Charlie XCX to insisting that the singer was merely an older, less lean version. Chris enjoyed the abrupt retreat far too much, while Scott tried to avoid the Breakfast Show dispute becoming a proper Radio 1 war.
With the Radio 1 film premiere only a week away, Chris announced a new way to help: he would become the project’s resident film critic and give it five stars. His audition tape was not encouraging. He reviewed films he had not seen, muddled the plot of Slumdog Millionaire, awarded Mila Kunis rather than Friends with Benefits the important marks, and declared The Hangover suitable for all the family.
Beccy then revealed the major name she had secured for the film’s credits: Tarantino. The catch was that the guest was Norman Tarantino, a man in Pennsylvania who believed Quentin Tarantino was probably his cousin and was perfectly happy for the programme to use his name. Scott immediately treated it as a genuine coup, happily imagining a Mills-Tarantino production and an eventual Oscar campaign.
Chris also resumed 24 Years at the Tap End, reading the chapter in which he arrived at Southampton University and began trying to work out Freshers’ Week. Scott and Beccy were especially taken with his description of “Tonk” Oggy, a supposedly formidable fresher rep, and the way Chris had written it as though the university bar were about to supply every important moment of his life.
The show finished with Innuendo Bingo: The Duel, pitting Chris against Beccy. Beccy had sensibly arrived in full wet-weather gear and a snorkel mask; Chris had turned up in his normal clothes and quickly regretted it. The clips defeated them both, Beccy’s water repeatedly landing on Chris’s head, before the pair returned to the ongoing, increasingly impossible plot of Trapped in the Closet.
