The Midnight Beast visit Scott as Mike airbrushes his girlfriend
Back on his regular afternoon show after two weeks of Breakfast cover, Scott opened with a problem involving his newly replaced phone. It had lasted only days before he dropped it and cracked the screen, leaving parts of the keyboard unusable. The small disaster set the tone for an afternoon in which good intentions repeatedly went wrong.
Scott’s friend Mike provided the clearest example. After a holiday in the United States, he had selected photographs for the wall and used editing software to make his girlfriend’s nose smaller, alter her teeth and generally “improve” the picture. Mike was baffled that she treated it as an insult, insisting that he had only been trying to make the photo nice.
His previous romantic gesture had gone no better. Mike had offered to buy flowers, then decided he would return later when they had been reduced from £7 to 50p. Scott was delighted by the consistency: Mike saw both choices as considerate, while the studio could hear exactly why they were likely to cause an argument.
The Midnight Beast were the afternoon’s guests, arriving with an enthusiastic fanbase already filling the texts. Scott talked about their YouTube success, their Edinburgh cabaret show, their book and the difficulty of finding a version of their material suitable for daytime Radio 1. Their appearance brought a welcome burst of organised silliness to a programme already full of it.
The show also replayed One Direction telling Beccy that they loved her, something she was determined not to make a big deal about despite everyone else treating it as an event. Scott’s karaoke warning about “Gotta Be You” and the continuing obsession with the band ensured that the afternoon stayed playfully chaotic from start to finish.
