Chris becomes the Sexy Mexican, Radio 1’s newest superhero
Scott returned to Chris’s new ambition to become a real-life superhero, which had sounded rather theoretical when he announced it the day before. It had now acquired a name, a costume and a public identity: Chris was calling himself the Sexy Mexican, or “Sexicon” for short. Scott enjoyed the fact that an idea Chris had presented as crime-fighting had quickly become an excuse for a moustache and a Facebook photo.
The picture produced several less-than-flattering comparisons. Listeners thought Chris looked like the man from the toilet-roll adverts, while others detected a little of the emergency-services comedy 999 in the outfit. Chris took the criticism remarkably well, perhaps because hundreds of people had already liked the photograph and because several listeners wanted to volunteer as his sidekick.
Beccy was nominated for that supporting role, under the less memorable title of the Bexicon. Scott thought the pair would make a serviceable superhero double act, but Chris was more concerned with finding a villain. Every proper hero needed a nemesis, and Matt Fincham was quickly identified as the obvious candidate.
Chris rang Fincham, who was attempting to get on with an important meeting, and announced in a deliberately dramatic voice that he had detected his evil plan. Fincham sounded more baffled than threatening, but Chris kept promising that the Sexy Mexican would be watching him. The call ended with Chris’s triumphant “Arriba”, followed by the rather more realistic suggestion that they would see each other in the pub.
Elsewhere, the programme kept its usual mix of requests, Download Festival chat and listener messages, but the superhero story gave it a clear centre. Scott was amused that Chris’s first day of vigilante work had involved no crime-fighting at all, only a costume, a telephone call and the creation of the Finchinator. It was enough to establish a new and very unserious Radio 1 universe.
