Beccy returns as Scott’s superhero plans get bigger
Beccy returned after a few days away to a restrained half-clap from Scott, who insisted it did not reflect how pleased he was to see her. Scott had used the weekend to attempt Brian Butterfield’s fictional diet, which largely involved him treating the absurd “treat day” menu as genuine guidance and eating far too much. He then stayed indoors watching 24, explaining that his food hangover had made a full weekend of television seem like the sensible option.
Chris, meanwhile, had made considerably more progress with his superhero project. The day before Beccy left, he had merely wanted to become a real-life superhero. By the time she returned, he was the Sexy Mexican, had a costume and had put himself online for public inspection. Scott quickly brought Beccy up to speed on the sidekick and nemesis plans.
The team revisited Chris’s decision to call Matt Fincham and accuse him of having an evil master plan. Chris was pleased with his superhero identity, even if there was still no evidence that Pinner, Watford or anywhere else had become safer as a result. Scott thought the costume and self-belief had arrived much faster than any workable mission.
Hayley Williams from Paramore joined the programme, giving the show a proper music guest amid all the superhero silliness. The conversation gave Scott and Beccy an opportunity to move from Chris’s homemade mythology to Paramore’s work and the band’s audience, while Chris continued to look as though he would happily return to discussing capes and villains at any moment.
Beccy’s return restored the familiar balance of the programme. She could treat Scott’s latest diet and Chris’s heroic persona with the same mixture of disbelief and encouragement, while Scott enjoyed both stories too much to let either go. The day ended with the Sexy Mexican firmly established as one of the show’s most unnecessary but memorable creations.
