Gemma Collins explains the perfect Essex night out
Scott began his Breakfast Show cover week with Gemma Collins from The Only Way Is Essex, making no attempt to hide how pleased he was to have her in the studio. Their first topic was Gemma’s search for a man capable of “ordering the wines and all that”, a skill she suspected men mostly pretended to possess. Mick remained a possibility, but Gemma said she was keeping things cool after his Champagne gesture had left her in tears when he walked past her.
An old part of Gemma’s life was never far from the conversation. She had spent four years selling BMWs after beginning as a receptionist, and said her boss sent her to the BMW Academy because she was wasted behind the desk making tea. She still relished the idea of supplying a gunmetal-grey BMW One Series, with sat-nav, Bluetooth and alloy wheels, and confidently claimed that much of Essex had bought cars from her.
Scott asked what a Gemma Collins night out involved. Her answer began with getting ready from around quarter to six, including a bath, creams, rollers, bronzer, perfume and an outfit already waiting. The essential stage was pre-drinks, after which she would head into Brentwood, survey the room and work out who was hot, who was not, and who might be able to handle the wine ordering.
She recalled taking Scott out in Essex, where he found himself mobbed in a courtyard after the pair had met near McDonald’s. Gemma was equally candid about the sudden attention she was receiving after the series, saying she had always been known locally because she sold so many relatives’ cars, but was now being asked for photographs, kisses and attention wherever she went. She said she loved it and thanked Lime Pictures and ITV2 for changing her life.
The conversation also turned to a new boot-camp and diet regime. Gemma said she felt good about herself and loved her curves, but wanted to improve her health after overindulging in Champagne, brandy and the food she enjoyed. She gamely sat beside a doughnut, French fancy and chocolate cake without taking a bite, then remembered the first time Scott had mentioned her on Radio 1: she had turned up every radio in the house, texted everyone she knew and celebrated with salt-and-pepper squid and a Chinese takeaway.
