Scott worries he will run away with the circus
The programme returned to the previous night’s revision stunt, with Chris’s volcano lesson still producing the chant “magma, lava, rock”. Scott and Beccy also revisited disastrous German exchanges, including Chris’s experience of returning from Germany only to find his own exchange partner would not be coming to Britain.
Scott then became preoccupied with a fair that had appeared near his home. Beccy and Chris agreed that he could still go, provided he avoided the more child-focused attractions, but Scott felt the real danger was not looking out of place. One of his aunts had once gone to a circus and run away with a carny, and he worried the impulse might be hereditary.
He pictured the consequences with growing seriousness: Radio 1 wondering where he had gone, only to discover he was now travelling with the fair and operating the Waltzers. Beccy’s own childhood memory made the rides less tempting, involving enormous hot dogs before a spinning attraction and the fairground song that still made her feel ill.
Callers did little to reassure Scott. One told of a university friend whose girlfriend had gone to South America, met a Peruvian fire-breathing juggler and never really returned to the old relationship. Another had dated a man who claimed to have run away with the circus, only to discover that his romantic-sounding role had largely involved looking after camels.
The team also developed Stark Sports, their proposed channel for people playing sport badly. A listener suggested a golf show following himself, his brother and their grandfather, and Scott decided they would be ideal stars. Chris, meanwhile, was still pursuing his plan to get Lady Gaga into a Watford shirt at the Big Weekend, despite Scott’s certainty that neither Gaga nor the shirt would welcome the encounter.
