The Longest Show Ever reaches its final stretch
By the final stretch of Radio 1’s Comic Relief marathon, sleep deprivation had become part of every link. Scott and the team were still finding reasons to laugh, although they knew that many jokes were funny mainly because nobody had slept.
Fundraising totals continued to rise and gave the broadcast its direction. Each update reminded the studio that the long hours and increasingly chaotic games were producing something worthwhile for Comic Relief.
Scott used the familiar machinery of his show to keep things moving: listener interaction, games, competitive guesses and the chance to make Chris do something he had not volunteered for. The tone was recognisably Scott Mills, only far more tired.
Guests and presenters moved through the studio, ensuring that no one person had to carry the whole event. The handovers were as important as the headline stunts because they kept the marathon feeling like a Radio 1 effort.
The programme’s mood was equal parts determination and delirium. Scott did not pretend the schedule was easy, but he made the exhaustion part of the entertainment while the appeal remained at the centre of the show.
