Ed Westwick and Olly Murs join Scott in the studio
Scott put the Radio 1 webcam to work for an unusually busy afternoon, though Beccy’s attempt to reduce the shine from the studio lights became an ongoing distraction. A little powder was meant to make Scott less reflective on camera; instead, Beccy decided he had acquired a noticeably different-coloured forehead and chin. Scott defended the effort, while Chris enjoyed the chance to tease him before the guests arrived.
The first visitor was Ed Westwick, back in Britain to promote Chalet Girl. Scott and Beccy had seen the film the previous week and asked him about playing Jonny, the wealthy English love interest opposite Felicity Jones. Ed explained that it had been enjoyable to play a nicer character than Gossip Girl’s Chuck Bass, and described filming in Austria and Germany, as well as the parts of the skiing he had been able to do himself.
Scott also challenged Ed on reports that he was bored of Chuck Bass. Ed said his comments had been taken out of context: he wanted to do other work alongside the series, rather than abandon it. He was still enjoying the show, had another two years on his contract and thought Chuck could continue for another year or two. If the character eventually left, though, Ed rather liked the idea of a spectacular Scarface-style exit.
The interview also took in Stevenage, which Ed described with affectionate honesty, and an old awkwardness involving Scott’s baby-food challenge with Ed’s Gossip Girl colleague Chace Crawford. Ed recalled arriving at an Oscar-weekend party before he was well known and treating the gift bags as the main attraction, while Scott was fascinated to learn that he had not watched Gossip Girl since midway through its first series.
Later, Olly Murs joined the show as Scott discussed the forthcoming Comic Relief Red Nose Desert Trek. Scott listed the northern Kenya challenge ahead, including five days outdoors, extreme heat, camels and the possibility of snakes and sandstorms. Olly was one of the fellow trekkers, alongside Craig David, Dermot O’Leary, Kara Tointon, Ronni Ancona, Nadia Sawalha and Peter White, and the team used the visit to encourage listeners to support the appeal.
