Beccy tries to live like Gwyneth Paltrow
Beccy decided February would be the month she finally became less disorganised, by following advice from Gwyneth Paltrow’s website as literally as possible. Scott gently pointed out that this was a fairly high-cost route to self-improvement, but Beccy was determined to ask herself what Gwyneth would do in every situation. It was only day two, and the plan was already proving difficult to maintain.
For a friend’s birthday, Gwyneth’s advice had suggested a personalised present, ideally an embroidered tea towel. Beccy contrasted that with her usual instinct to buy an Ed Westwick calendar, then accepted that she now had to make the tea towel herself by Friday. Dinner did not help: the proposed family-style Mexican meal involved separate taco fillings for children and adults, leaving Beccy to point out that she had neither the required ingredients nor any children.
The international element escalated quickly. A glowing entry about Nashville persuaded Beccy that she ought to go there, while her need for deodorant became a problem after Gwyneth recommended French pharmacy products. Her dad was travelling to Normandy the following week, so Beccy settled on borrowing her boyfriend’s deodorant until then, accepting that she might smell like a teenage boy in the meantime.
Scott enjoyed reading out further lifestyle instructions, including arranging an expensive LA concierge service, buying fish from a named supplier and laying out children’s school uniforms, consent forms and ballet kits the night before. Beccy had no children, but listeners were helpfully offering to lend her some so she could do the Mexican meal and school-run routine properly. The pair concluded that Gwyneth needed a budget version of the advice for people without a Hollywood household.
The rest of the show continued the usual mixture of increasingly overthought nonsense. Scott was still searching for a karaoke venue with Trapped in the Closet, and Beccy agreed she could play Rosie, Gwendolyn and Big Man if they ever staged it. On Stupid Street, members of the public revealed their personal role models, while Beccy also admitted that she had collected three traffic citations when Robbie Williams lent her a car during a US trip, an expensive detour from trying to live like Gwyneth.
