Sara Cox interviews Usher and checks in on Scott’s desert trek
Sara’s Friday programme was dominated by Usher’s visit to Radio 1. She was delighted to meet him and immediately made herself laugh by greeting him with lines such as “I’m all the better for seeing you”, telling him he had nice eyes and then graduating to the even more direct “lovely face”. Beccy later assembled the evidence as Sara Cox’s own flirting school, mostly as a guide to what not to say.
Usher played along generously. He discussed his O2 shows, the hot-and-cold recovery routine he used after performing, his swimming pool and the possibility of Sara and Beccy appearing in a future music video. The interview also resurrected Beccy’s homemade remix of his “Daddy’s Home” phrases, which Usher heard with rather more patience than anyone had a right to expect.
Away from the celebrity visit, Sara had an update from Scott in Kenya. A video of him with a torch strapped to his head had convinced people he was beginning to lose the plot after a full day’s walking, but Scott was simply finding a way to entertain himself at camp. He also described the scorpions visible under ultraviolet light and the need to shake out everything in his tent before sleeping.
Scott remained determined despite the conditions. He spoke of the heat, the lack of ordinary comfort and the importance of drinking enough water, while Sara and Beccy made sure he knew the studio and listeners were proud of him. Beccy joined the call to remind him to keep walking, providing the affectionate home-side encouragement he needed.
The show ended by turning the trek’s camels into a Stupid Street challenge, asking people to imitate the animals and identify their famous habit of spitting. It was a characteristically silly way to support a genuinely difficult challenge, with the Comic Relief donation message kept close to the centre of the programme.
