Beccy’s Brit Awards encounter with Justin Bieber
Scott and Beccy returned from the Brit Awards with the sort of backstage stories that would not make the television coverage. Their improvised cocktail operation had been part of Radio 1’s attempt to make a base at the O2 feel suitably glamorous, although Beccy’s drinks were never likely to rival the polished hospitality available elsewhere at the ceremony.
The team had ended up at a table they were not entirely certain they were meant to be occupying. The resulting roll-call was suitably unlikely, with Lewis Hamilton, Dizzee Rascal, Dermot O’Leary and Torvill and Dean among the people around them. It gave Scott and Beccy plenty of material to relive once the formal awards-night excitement had subsided.
Beccy’s standout encounter was with Justin Bieber. She handed him one of the show’s cocktails and got close enough to report back on his carefully styled hair, which she described as smelling of hairspray, leather and “cold hard cash”. Rather than treating the meeting as a conventional celebrity interview, the show turned the observation into one of its short, silly musical moments.
The Brit Awards had provided exactly the kind of access Scott and Beccy enjoyed, close enough to major names to ask them questions and slightly too close to the room’s reserved seating to feel fully relaxed. Their account focused on the oddness of finding themselves among familiar television and music figures, not on trying to sound like polished showbiz correspondents.
That contrast was the point of the recap. The programme had gone to one of pop’s biggest nights with a cocktail bar, a pile of listener questions and Beccy’s running commentary, then came back with a story about smelling Justin Bieber’s hair. It was a very Radio 1 way to make the Brit Awards feel less remote.
