29 October 2007: Steve Strange on Celebrity Scissorhands Series 2

Steve Strange returns to promote the new series of Celebrity Scissorhands for Children in Need, now promoted to assistant manager of the salon academy, and Scott gets the inside story on the celebrity lineup and what to expect.

Steve Strange joins Scott to discuss the second series of Celebrity Scissorhands, the BBC3 show that pairs celebrities with amateur hairdressers and beauty therapists to raise money for Children in Need. Steve explains the format: celebrities are placed in a salon academy where they’re taught (or attempt to teach themselves) hairdressing and beauty skills, then treat both members of the public and other celebrities, who make donations in exchange. This year, Steve has been promoted from general helper to assistant manager, though he admits he’s not naturally comfortable with authority or telling people off.

The conversation covers some of the celebrities involved in the new series, including George Lamb (presenter), Ben Nicholas from Neighbours, Warwick Davis, and others. Scott and Steve discuss the kinds of clients who make the best subjects—those who are relaxed about their hair and understand the charity aspect. They also revisit memorable moments from last year, including a beauty therapist who was sick after seeing a client’s feet, and Nikki from Big Brother’s memorable refusal to let Steve anywhere near her hair, which resulted in her becoming increasingly upset.

Steve reveals his own anxieties about the work, particularly the moment when a client first sees their new haircut and reacts. He’s keen to do facials and other beauty treatments but less confident about cutting hair. The episode also includes the Flirt Divert answer phone feature with messages from listeners, including one about expired food items. Celebrity Scissorhands starts on BBC3 the following Sunday.
