Scott and the team tackle cake competitions, a very drunk woman’s first date with teetotal Russell Brand, and an evening at a transvestite club that left everyone confused about who was dancing with whom.
The show opens with a brilliant news story about Jenny Brown, a 62-year-old who entered a Victoria sponge into a cake-baking competition and came second—despite being the only entrant. Her cake lost marks because it bore indentations from the cooling rack and marks from greaseproof paper. The team learn she’s had similar bad luck before: she entered fruit scones in another show, was again the only entrant, and came third.
Scott and the team then sketch out a listener’s dating horror story involving Russell Brand. The woman, nervous about meeting him, has several vodkas beforehand and arrives at his house very drunk—while Russell, who’s teetotal, drinks nothing at all. The sketch plays out the awkward evening with exaggerated comedy taxi-driver commentary and increasingly slurred dialogue.
Later, Danny Howard rings in to talk about his previous night. He’d gone to see Scouting for Girls at a gig in London Soho, where he’d had to wait for Scott outside Prowler (a well-known adult shop), getting offered various services and shown someone’s very snug black trunks. After the concert, Danny stayed on for what he describes as “Tranni Explosion”—a transvestite night—where some of the newsbeat girls also ended up. The confusion arose because, as Danny puts it, it was “very difficult to tell who was who and what was what.” He denies copping off with anyone, though admits he got “a lot of attention.” The highlight seems to have been Chilamism grabbing a man in uniform and dragging him onto the dance floor.
