9 February 2007: David Blaine, Celebrity Chef Action Films, and Sue Marchent’s Quiz

Scott and the team cover David Blaine’s disappointing “speed of light” trick at a phone launch, revisit Sue Marchent’s baffling “What Is It?” quiz from Radio Norfolk, and discuss a listener’s ambitious screenplay concept: an 80s action blockbuster starring Tom Cruise as a celebrity chef.

The show opens with clips of Edith sledging, which became a recurring talking point. Scott plays audio of Sue Marchent’s Radio Norfolk show, where she reads out factory worker shout-outs and runs her signature “What Is It?” quiz — a guessing game where listeners try to identify something from her cryptic descriptions. One clue (“Sometimes misleading and I keep bumping into them”) stumps everyone, with guesses ranging from dogs to shopping trolleys, and it remains unsolved despite generating thousands of texts.

The main entertainment comes from Scott’s account of attending David Blaine’s live show in London. Rather than performing actual magic, Blaine’s “trick” was heavily sponsored by a phone company and involved throwing cards off stage, then reappearing on the other side — supposedly faster than the speed of light. Scott was unimpressed, particularly as he may have only seen a body double, and found the whole thing underwhelming. Chris, the team’s magician friend, apparently outperformed Blaine when Scott “pimped him out” to the crowd.

A lengthy conversation with listener Stuart covers his screenplay idea: a contemporary action film mashing together 80s blockbuster tropes (Top Gun, Under Siege) with the celebrity chef phenomenon. He pitches Tom Cruise as a celebrity chef hero competing in an “omelette challenge” against a rival, with an estimated budget of £100 million and full Hollywood special effects. Scott and the team gently probe whether the concept has enough dramatic substance to justify such an investment, though Stuart remains enthusiastic.

The show also includes a clip of Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen on a property show, delivering innuendo-laden commentary about felt hat-making that Scott finds hilarious.
