26 September 2006: Chris the Medium and the “Text a Dead Person” Service

Scott and the team launch a bizarre new feature called “Text the Dead” with visiting spirit medium Chris, fielding questions for listeners’ deceased relatives — including a granddad famous for blaming his farts on the dog, and a Scottish grandmother’s cluty dumpling recipe gone wrong.

The show opens with Laura’s idea for a text-based service connecting listeners to the spirit world via a medium. Chris, a spirit medium who has been seeing spirits for 30 years, agrees to help field listener questions. The first caller, Matt from Stafford, asks about his granddad, who used to fart constantly and blame the family dog. Chris picks up on the spirit presence and reveals that the granddad’s farts were real — and that he can still communicate through smell, promising Matt will notice similar odours over the coming weeks as a sign his granddad is around.

The second caller, TQ, asks for help with her late Scottish grandmother’s cluty dumpling recipe, which she’s been unable to recreate. Chris channels the grandmother and delivers remarkably specific cooking advice: 50 grams too much in the original quantities, too much yeast (reduce by half), and a “knob of butter, not a pack.” He also notes that wrapping it in a pillowcase instead of muslin was a mistake. The grandmother apparently found the whole disaster hilarious.

Later in the show, the team plays the old “funny names from the phone book” prank, finding real Americans with amusing surnames. Chappers phones Anita Beaver and gets her to confirm her full name on air repeatedly, leading to predictable childish laughter from the studio.

The episode closes with “Float of the Earth,” the show’s Monday feature where listeners call in with stories about people they’ve met over the weekend.
