Radio 1's Future Sounds have an interview with that new and upcoming artist Elton John https://ontheradio.co.uk/2023...artists-at-glastonbury-2023/

Greg said the interview with Elton would be up on iplayer too, crazy how he's still headlining festivals and getting so much time on R1, what a career

  2. For some reason when I'm on my laptop I can only see it at the top of the page when I'm viewing a thread, not on the main forum page. It's there on my mobile though, so not sure if it's just me

  3. I personally don't feel like there's any particular successful formula for a good/well liked DJ. Others may have slicker formats and cleverly put together games on paper, but that doesn't make Greg's show any less impressive in my eyes.  This isn't me being overly defensive of Greg, but I like how he embraces the unpredictability of having live callers and that can be all the fun that's needed. Songs, silly games, let's face it, who is awake enough to play mastermind style games at 7am? I like how he makes sure even the highest ranking celebrities are all levelled by the kind of features that get people talking - unpopular opinions, ask the nations, it was always meant to be about the listener.

If I'm not mistaken,  I think 'what are you having for your tea' was an off the cuff idea that got so much interaction from the listeners that Vick & Jordan decided to keep it (I'm aware there's more to it than that), but I just think relatability goes a long way, it's why I listen anyway.

The amount of love that people have for Greg on this forum seems to be at odds with his listener figures. The amount of love for the most basic presenters seems weird considering this is a Scott Mills forum who had fun games, engaging features and was funny. Greg outside of R1 is great but on his show he sings a song called ten to ten, plays a game called stand up or sit down. Jordan has a segment called what are you having for dinner. Katie does some weird segments too! The only ones that compare to Scott are Matt and Molly and this is evidenced by the fact that they were the most popular presenters at R1 Dundee. They opened radio 1 big weekend and were the lead presenters during the weekend, all the DJs played their games with the celebrities also they have producer Amy. They have a tonne of games and they’re the most engaging DJs. I don’t think they’d take the breakfast slot as neither of them like waking up early but they’re not going anywhere. Aled likes them far too much. Either drive time or mid morning.

  4. Hi, welcome!

I downloaded all of them from BBC sounds at the time, and I have a podcast listed as from the 10th August, called feet and pasties -  not sure why it's missing now, but I would be happy to send it to you if you like?

Hello everyone. I’m a long time lurker on here so thought I’d finally set up an account

I’m currently on holiday in Cornwall and have been listening back to the Newquay episodes from last year but one seems to be missing.

There’s one for the 8th, 9th and 11th August and the Sunset Chat but the 10th seems to be missing… anyone got any ideas or was there not a podcast for that day?

    Thank you.

  5. I've been listening for the last few years, it does make me chuckle. I love the weekly Youtube recorded version too.

I think Gregor Davidson when he was on early breakfast last week got done with a very sneaky 'Wendy - Can I borrow your potato peeler'. He was asking for random nicknames for peoples' neighbours, and a texter said they called their neighbour Maris because she came around to borrow a potato peeler, and later they found out she was called Wendy ?

Scott's doing panto in Leicestershire! Maybe we should do a Unofficial Mills meet-up like old times!

I would never have had Scott down for a panto, brilliant! Sadly I’m too far away for a meetup but it sounds like a great idea!

  7. I agree with the point that Radio 2 is a huge offer, and one that would have to be considered if it was offered. I can't help thinking that Greg at this point in his career also has other options though; he is so versatile that he is not necesarily going to do the standard move from R1 to R2 in my opinion. His other podcasts for example, show he has an interest in exploring other types of work, and I'm not convinced he would want to make the move if he was offered it.

At the same time, I imagine the backlash would be enormous if it did happen. The boss of R2 would surely be taking a huge risk in making that offer, for another youngster from R1 joining the crew so soon after Scott... As much as they are trying to change the feel of the station, I'm not convinced now is the time they would choose to try to get Greg on.

  8. I don't think it will happen, and I don't want it to happen, but I do think that Greg could just be the perfect personality to shake up the middle-classness of Radio 2.

He's very good at reading the room, very capable of adapting to different environments and covering serious topics with sincerity and light-heartedness, but mostly I feel his style of taking the mick out of himself and his listeners could well be a refreshing change to R2 from what I have listened to recently.

  9. Tricky one, I'm on the fence here.  The structure I feel that is missing, is what the R1 show was based on - Scott and Chris having a chat about either something going on in their personal lives, or a current trend or something in the news, and naturally the listeners would join in and the show/features would grow from there.   I do think there has been more of that as the weeks have gone by, but I think it will take time to grow, especially since there is no 'wing man' to bounce off.

In the run up to Christmas, I think it was warming up and sounding more like Scott, he was sounding more at home, and I think that will continue to grow now as he gets used to his new station and audience. I can't help but feel like Radio 2 is a 'safe' place which doesn't seem to go rogue as much as Radio 1, and to me it just seems like he is playing it safe until he really finds his feet.  I think he rightfully is being careful about what 'in-jokes' and features he brings over from R1, because they have to develop naturally with all the listeners, he can't just broadcast as if his R1 listeners have all followed him over and who everything for example. I think it just needs time for it to become the thing we want it to be (as Scott fans).

  10. I couldn’t agree more with the ‘middle class mummy’ comment, and in some ways I wish I didn’t have to. I’m so used to the inclusivity of R1 that I have found R2 a bit jarring, even though I’m sure it doesn’t mean to be that way as a station.

I love the music Scott is playing, I stayed for Sara Cox’ show for the first time today and really enjoyed it, it just doesn’t have the edge that R1 has and I can’t put my finger on it. It all feels a bit safe, a bit too cosy, and I love the unpredictability of R1.

however, listening to R2 makes me think they could really switch up the R1 playlist and make it less repetitive, I think they did at the start of the pandemic when they were avoiding any triggering songs. Basically I want R1+R2 music with mostly R1 chat please ?

  11. Great thread, I would really love Jordan to get Christmas day, he has already said he wants to do it. Will of course be weird without Scott this year, but Jordan is the natural take over I think.

I'm not sure Greg would do Christmas day, as much fun as I think that would be, I think that would be family time for him rather than wanting to work.

Does anyone know what normally happens on Radio 2 on Christmas day? Is Scott likely to get a look in for it there?

  12. I think this has been my unpopular opinion about R1 for the last year or so. The shows are slick and impressive, but they almost seem too cut and polished. Any sort of on-air chaos is reigned in, (and sometimes cut from the podcasts when it does happen). There is so much pressure on the presenters to play the next song. For me, some of the most fun about live radio is when things get wild, when the presenters are laughing so hard that they forget they are on air. I think it used to happen a lot when Will was with Scott and Chris, and I noticed there was a lot less 'messing' allowed when Amy joined.

That might be because I was a young listener when Moyles did Breakfast, and he just talked as much as he wanted to with seemingly no regard for how much music he was playing. But for me, the beauty of radio is getting to know the presenters, we have streaming services for just listening to music. I even noticed Scott's last show was heavily music-focused and no room to relax and be in the moment that it was.

If that's what the audience say they wanted then I can't argue with that, I'm outside of the demographic. I just find it a little bit sad that the world seems to want less and less personality and interaction.
