May see some inyteresting social media stuff from the DJs - maybe Sara and Scott hvaing a chat I wouldnt think they they will visit each other on air but maybe some social stuff to see

There are 6 studios shared with R1, 1Xtra and Asian Network. 82A and B are the 2 bigger studios and are mainly used by Radio 1 as that is the flagship station out of the 3, but another big reason? The Live Lounge! 82A Can't be used to broadcast during a Live Lounge because all the equipment for the LL (Such as the mixing desk etc) is in 82A, and as such the studio is full of the Tech Ops who are mixing and controlling the LL. Clara (and Fearne when she was there) always does her show from 82B. On the days when 1Xtra had a LL and R1 didn't Trevor would be in 82B and Fearne would be in one of the smaller studios. When Greg was on drive he would normally use 82B as well. Greg, Scott and Annie don't just use 82A though, if someone else has booked that studio then they will use one of the smaller ones.

The chart has always been in one of the smaller studios, even when Reggie and Jameela did it. Greg only used to do the Chart in 82B because that was his studio at the time for drive.

I did Feet Up Friday (Whoooooooooo?!?) with Dev back in 2014 and we were in 82B and to say the studios were only about 2 years old then, they were battered!

I thought Clara and Grimmy use 82D?

  3. Why is 82A always used by Greg, Scott and Annie? and 82D by the others? Is it true that 82A was designed to be bigger to accommodate the Chris Moyles show (because it was designed and being built before he announced he was leaving) and all its interactive features streaming and all? hence why the breakfast show latterly came from there ? I know Scott does use a different studio on a Friday for the chart I got this answered on the Chris Stark podcast but they didn't explain why

They also explained that they didn't use 82A when there was a live lounge on, that the studios reversed when there was one

They seem to reverse at weekends too?

  4. How does the hand over process happen between two shows? for instance alot of the time at the moment presenters are bing encouraged to talk at the start of the show

Some time ago the breakfast show would play it's last song then a Clara Jingle would play and then a song and she would speak after two back to back songs at like 10:06

Now seems Greg talks out of the breakfast show plays his bed at 09:59:20 and talks upto 10 then Clara's anthems jingle plays and she talks at 10:00:10

Greg fades claras studio up as an input as hes talking and plays her intro and hands control over then or during his last song hands control over and Clara just has his studio faded up as an input for him to play his outro and say bye and then as her intro plays fades him down and carries on

When does Clara Hand over to Scott? at 1245 when newsbeat is on?

Oh yeah when Pete did breakfast and crashed the cheesy song vocal ?. Classic. But doubt anything like that will happen this bank holiday.

I wonder if Phil will use the Breakfast package Greg uses

I assume there must be three/four versions of this knocking about now

Same jingles and stabs but different names Greg's of course, Scott's (he did have a package done which said Scott & Chris) M&M and a generic one that says "Radio 1 Breakfast"

So assume Phil would use "Radio 1 Breakfast" same as when Mistajam covered for Grimmy in 2017 for a week he used a generic set without his name

If a few of them want it off I guess they might as well write off the whole day and make a thing of it - will be good to hear Jack Saunders in a daytime slot, he's barely mentioned on here I think he has a lot potential to be some of the new 'young talent'

He was daytime on Radio X wasn't he?

I can see him on one of the weekday daytime slots before long

Talking of which Toby Tarrant is in for Moyles this week he's got to be the next for a breakfast show

Surprised that RMC isnt the breakfast show, I think Phil would work better in the 10am slot as well. I'll definitely be listening!

It's all added a very interesting dynamic to it - Pete Tong playing A list hits - can you see it ? remember when he covered the Chris Moyles show that time that was a laugh he talked all over the cheesy song

Wonder why this is - I would expect to see at least one of the weekday presenters in slot as normal

And HOW is Grimmy OFF again

Really like this idea! Would be great to get Scott and Chris involved

We could try to arrange it through his BBC email - unless anyone here has access to him via text or face 2 face? I know he reads these threads (Hello Scott if your reading)

Otherwise we could attempt to ask through social media prompt him to read this or ask his agents but him and Chris seem approchable people

I know Scott is a busy man but (and not dissing) Chris may be more likely to respond

  9. How about this

who would like to arrange a meet for members of the site in London near NBH? like a coffee/lunch scenario and see if Scott and some of the team could come to meet us and chat for an hour or so? I thought a Friday at like 11am to meet and invite Scott Chris maybe his producer? so we could meet our hero and just say hi or is it like weird? and people say you should never meet your idol?

I personally enjoyed Alice Levine covering on Thursday, but I don't think we'll ever see a scenario where Dev & Alice take over 4-7.

I like Grimmy sometimes - for me he will always be the guy who took breakfast off Moyles - not took but took over - neither made the decision it was Ben Cooper but things were never the same IMO Scott should have had breakfast

Anyway I digress - YES loved Alice covering last week she was natural and worked well in the slot, the producer of Grimmys show is Jenny who used to be with Alice on weekends so they work well anyway

I cannot see D&A taking the slot either but I feel sorry for Dev he is always short changed of a regular weekday show I could see Alice replacing Clara one day?

I don’t think so anyone else’s think there will be a big schedule change next year

I certainly think the new Pop Controller will want her stamp on things - which have been very stagnant under Ben Cooper until Aled has changed a few things lately

Ben Cooper the man who made massive change in 2012/13

I think there will be a bannister style operation soon

Jordan was brilliant last week on breakfast, deserves a decent slot ASAP. He’s not afraid to bring his features across like North’s knock offs.

I’m not a Grimmy fan so hopefully he will get drive in the next 6 months or so. Management must rate him as they have trusted him in every slot now.

He has actually covered every daytime show now hasn't he which is something older hands like Dev, Greg, Scott etc haven't done

Grimmy covered for Fearne, Scott on drive and afternoons and Greg - (that was funny Grimmy covering for Scott who was covering for Moyles when Moyles was on holiday during his notice being replaced with Grimmy)

Has Scott ever covered a show out of daytime times apart from special events?

I do have some insider knowledge on this, and you're pretty much bang on!

For the hourly simulcasted news, at xx:29:50 the News In Ramp gets played by the DJs on air on R1 & 1X and they fade up the news studio and leave it up for the whole bulletin. The rest of the beds and clips (including the News Out Stab) are played by the newsreader in their studio. Once the News Out Stab has been played then the DJs will start their next song or jingle and fade the news studio down again. Now unless things have changed in the last couple of years, the 15 min programs are the same as above with the news studio is faded up for the whole program, the only difference being that there are Tech-Ops in the adjoining news studio pressing the buttons etc.

Breakfast is different. R1 & 1Xtra Breakfast have their own news, so the back timing on the Ramp isn't as important to get bang on. That's why on breakfast you'll hear "Radio 1 Newsbeat it's now (insert time here)" instead of "This is newsbeat, we're back in an hour" for example. At the start of Grimmy's stint on breakfast, Tina used to be in the news studio. It was only a few years after she gained more of an on-air presence again that she joined Grimmy in his studio for the news. Rosin is mainly (if not always) in the news studio for the news.

It's also worth noting that in the Nesbeat studio, the "Desk Mon" output that they use for monitoring and in their headphones is actually the output on R1, that's why on certain outside broadcasts when R1 have had issues broadcasting newsbeat and have bailed to a song, the news reader sounds a bit odd over on 1Xtra (the Nesta Mcgregor incident from last year is a brilliant example of this).

    Thanks for the insight

So if it is faded up for the 1245 bulliten some kind of handover must take place between Clara (82D) to Scott (82A)

And - while were on it why is 82A always used by Greg, Scott and Annie? and 82D by the others? Is it true that 82A was designed to be bigger to accommodate the Chris Moyles show (because it was designed and being built before he announced he was leaving) and all its interactive features streaming and all? hence why the breakfast show latterly came from there ? The whole of the BBC (TV, Radio etc) uses something called BNCS (Broadcast Network Control System). I believe it was in house designed by the BBC R&D Dept. This allows any studio across the whole of the BBC (From London to Cardiff to Salford etc) to take over any network (R1, R2, R5Live as examples), or route sources into their studio from anywhere in the BBC, including on the OB Vans.

I assume you just enter the studio you want to take control then? when does this happen? so when does Clara hand over control to Scott etc?

  15. Ok Geeks

I am looking to know how it works with Newsbeat between the DJs and studios

So I am assuming (maybe wrongly) on the breakfast show like Tina used to be Rosin is in with Greg and reads the news opposite therefore all Greg does is plays the news in fades her mic up and (iv'e seen this in pics) she has a small desk at the co hosts station and controls the beds and all there and at the end plays the extro and play on the song that is after? or does the DJ do that bit?

For other shows (I also think sometimes Rosin is in the separate news studio, specially for the 930/1030/1130 editions) does the DJ play the news in and hands control over to the news studio during or during the last song and plays the news in? I assume the DJ plays the news in and hands control of it over during that jingle while they are introducing it and newsbeat studio is faded up as an input then they fade down the DJ and on air studio and the newsbeat one becomes the on air for that two minutes then the new caster faded up the on air studio towards the end as they play the news out? and the DJ takes control and hits play on the system to play the next song - this must be true because the DJ sometimes speaks to the newscaster at the end like Greg not so much on Clara and Scott show but Grimmy defo has and Greg sure does (I know Chris Smith used to be in with Greg on drive a lot and not in the separate studio unless it was the 15 min programme)

And for the 15 minute programme I assume the same happens DJ plays news in hands control over during to the news studio who then takes full on air control and fades the 82A/D etc down and then the on air DJ doesn't get involved again until the end so I assume as soon as shes handed control over Clara is finished at like 1247 and is out and Scott has to listen to it about 1258 for timing and to be ready to take control at 1300 to hit play on the first song

I assume Grimmy does the same kind of thing at 1745 and listens in again at about 1758 to take back over so has time for a fag break get a drink?

Is it an offer/accept type system?

  16. He sounds so much fuller of life than Grimmy - the man just needs to go IMO put Scott back on drive for a few years after all he is already back on it Friday now just give him the other 4 to make it consistent and then give Jordan or D&A 1-4

Hide and seek does sound more likely but with so many DJs involved it would probably be less interesting than just Greg and Grimmy last year...?

I wonder if it is some kind of thing like hunted on TV ? the DJs all get set loose and someone (Greg and Grimmy) with the help of the listeners has to find them - and WHY isn't Scott involved ????

As mentioned in the chat box there is a cluster amount of changes as we go into August as the schedules from the 2nd-8th August have updated with lots of information as Ibiza weekend means a lot of shuffles

    • 2nd August is slightly different as Dev is solo and interestingly, although Scott is doing the chart, he is not doing Party Anthems and that is coming from Ibiza with Charlie Hedges covering instead
    • From the 3rd-4th August, Mollie King is solo on Weekend Breakfast
    • Dev and Alice are off on the 3rd-4th August so we get some unusual covers instead. On the 3rd, Harpz Kaur from the BBC Asian Network is covering and on the 4th August, Rickie, Melvin and Charlie are doing a show from Ibiza
    • Adele is out of her usual slot from the 4th-8th and with Arliee Free not available and Jordan covering Grimmy it means that Riyadh Khalaf is covering for Adele that week
    • Grimmy is also off from the 4th-8th so Jordan is covering Drive
    • Annie is also off from the 4th-8th so Phil Taggart covers for her instead
    • Rickie, Melvin & Charlie will also be off so Adele Roberts becomes the cover for that week.

So lots of Radio 1 presenters rested from Ibiza then which means cover is being found elsewhere.

What is really bizarre is that Scott is not being used to cover any other slots - him and Clara seem to be the only consistency

Ref Charlie doing Party Anthems makes sense from Ibiza so Scott gets an early day out of it (walk out at 1746) or hes on a flight straight to Ibiza to join the rest of them which is what he did last year

    Couple of weird things

    - so I'm assuming they wanted to book Matt and Mollie to cover breakfast, but Matt wasn't available. I find it weird that they don't either get Mollie to do it solo, or failing that the logical thing to do would be go for someone else, Scott + Chris/Alice + Dev/Jordan solo etc. Why have someone covering a cover for a whole week? It's very weird. They clearly really don't want to have Scott covering because that would be the logical thing to do

    - odd that Alice is covering without Dev, do we think this is a deliberate choice or Dev just wasn't available? On the Schedule as well it very confusingly says the show title "Jordan North" and describes it as Alice sits in for Grimmy... Who's doing this Scheduling?

    - Also Jordan covering breakfast means he can't cover drive (which he seems to be first choice for these days), having to ask someone else who doesn't normally do it (Alice) to cover without her co-presenter? Idk it just seems like they've made some very odd choices

    Just some thoughts... any opinions?

    Screenshot_20190716-222135__01.jpg

I think they are trying out different presenters just to mix it up a bit. It's clear they are getting ready for Scott to leave as he is not being used anymore and him and Clara would be the consistency for the week. Also its Summer Holidays so it's who is available maybe. Maybe it became a bit stale as Scott on breakfast and Jordan on drive as cover so they are letting other less prominent presenters have a go at the prime slots.

There’s a logic in having 1-4 and 4-7 different on a Friday, 10-1 and breakfast changing is ratings suicide. There’s obviously a reason scott and Chris haven’t been first choice for deps this year, they still sound spot on for Radio 1, so it’s odd logic considering Matt and Mollie are hardly the exciting new talent.  I can’t imagine Stark with Dev and Alice, if that was the case you’d put just dev or just Alice with him, as has been done previously.  It would dilute the duo’s brand brand, so having a duo cover Scott means no stark.  The weekend/Friday logic is to have a unified schedule for Friday-Sunday, which for a multitude of evident and less evident reasons is not ideal, especially with Mornings, but that will be the 6am reason.  I think the less profile Adele has on the network is probably for the best, considering her style is very much for target for the target demo.

I cannot imagine why Scott is not dep anymore because he has always been, unless it's waiting an impending move to R2 so they had to get new deps for breakfast

  21. 56 minutes ago, Mike123 said:

Sophie K interesting, they seem to be alternating, because my thought was Abbie Mcarthy was a more mainstream, and carefully on target presenter to cover, but we’ll see.  Charlie covering dance anthems is good, should essentially be what Adele was doing, but more on target, and younger in terms of style.

I can see Charlie as a future replacement for Jam on Dance Anthems actually the "club charlie" feature is great on Thursday at 2230

She will be more on target and probably do some live mixing too
