  1. How crazy is this - assuming Scott bridges the gap between Grimmy and Greg, he will have done it for FIVE breakfast show hosts - he first did it between Zoe Ball finishing and Sara Cox starting, then again between Coxy and Moyles, then Moyles and Grimmy and now (hopefully) Grimmy and Greg. Amazing.

I might even dig out and edit the shows from Scott Mills's "shortest breakfast show ever" back in 2012.

  2. So, the schedule for week 1 of Greg's break is up - Will Best on earlies, Grimmy still on breakfast, Adele in for Clara, Jordan in for Scott (for the first time ever - wonder if Chris will be with him?) and Dev and Alice in for Greg. Adele back on early breakfast on the Friday though, and Dev and Alice doing Friday breakfast as well. Not sure who's doing the chart yet.

  3. Another great Big Top 40 dig on last Thursday's show - Good News Jamie was talking about how Chris isn't credited for the show and Scott says "there's a certain presenter who does a chart show, she doesn't even get mentioned does she?"

What do we think of Good News Jamie - great comedy value or annoying and totally milking it? At the moment I think I'm the former although if they do it too many times it could quickly become the latter.

I listened back tot he podcast this morning and I was struck by how dignified Chris was when they announced it. Greg was obviously gutted/upset at having to announce it, and Chris spent the whole time making jokes about it and making Greg feel more comfortable at having the decision go public. I wasn't expecting a Moyles-esque rant, but he's taking it as well as the BBC could have hoped.

I do wonder if the reason that this was up in the air at the time of the announcement is that bosses think Greg might not have moved to breakfast without one of his best friends moving too (cynical thinking, though!).

Chris Smith really is a class act. Your theory could well be right actually.

No Chris on What's My Age Again AGAIN this week - Dev was supposed to be on but didn't show up so Grace did it instead - WHY NOT GET CHRIS SMITH?? I wouldn't be surprised if we've heard the last of him on Greg's show now. Hopefully I'm wrong and they'll have some kind of "on-air goodbye" next Thursday on the last drivetime show. Chris Smith has been really shoddily treated here, I have to say (not Greg's fault of course, management). Allegedly a similar thing happened to him when he was at Virgin with Christian O'Connell - he went on paternity leave and never came back because management decided the show was too blokey or something.

    Boooo.

Greg can't be happy about that, Chris Smith is one of his best friends, and has contributed a lot to the show over the years...I would say that the best bits of the podcast/show are when they're messing about (e.g. Tiny Terry and Tiny Ken, CERN receptionists, Butter Monster, Tea 20 commentary, and What's My Age Again to a degree).

It seemed such an obvious decision to make as well, can't understand the reasoning for not letting him....I hope they're not trying to put a square peg into a round hole with Greg and his breakfast show by making him do a show that's not him.

You're so right. Greg's show is good with or without Chris Smith. But the best bits have always been with Chris for as long as they've done stuff together. I can't think of a single favourite bit of his show that hasn't involved him. Count the Cocks, the tiny celebrities, all the other random funny stuff they used to do. They BELONG on-air together.

It's probably some age bullshit - I don't actually know how old Chris Smith is, but I'd imagine he's about ten years older than Greg considering he had a whole career with Christian O'Connell before Radio 1. So whoever-it-is doesn't want the new show sounding too old.

It could of course be the more mundane reason that Newsbeat is a part of BBC News and therefore Radio 1 holds no sway over them, but I can't see Newsbeat being so unaccommodating. After all, they used to let Chris Moyles pick his news and sport readers.

Whatever it is, Greg alluded to things going on behind the scenes that he couldn't talk about and wasn't entirely happy with.

I hope whoever is in charge reconsiders this huge mistake - it's nothing short of a tragedy. Just imagine they'd moved Chris Moyles to breakfast but not Comedy Dave. There would've been an outcry.

I'm sure nothing we do could change it, but is there anything we could do to to at least register our anger?

  6. Wonder who'll cover for the two weeks/month (I think a month is more likely as Moyles had a month when he finished afternoons and there's something about "little break" that sounds more long term than "holiday"). Could be Dev (and Alice?) but unless they got someone to cover their show too, they'd be on seven days a week for a month or four or five weeks. I reckon this could be Jordan's chance to shine, he could do a month on drivetime whilst still doing Greatest Hits on Sunday. Unless, that is, Maya Jama finds herself out of employment sometime soon...

And I wonder whether Grimmy will also have an extended break. There was just a week between Moyles ending and Grimmy starting (Scott Mills with the shortest breakfast show in Radio 1's history, it was funny - listen back if you can), but Moyles wasn't starting a new show. If they give them both a month off, we could have a month of Mills at breakfast and Jordan at drive, which would be a good alternative schedule.

  7. Literally just announced on air right now: Greg's last drivetime show is Thursday 19th July. Two week's time! And at 6:35pm he'll play the song he hates most on the Radio 1 playlist.

He said he's taking "a little break" before the breakfast show starts, so I'd take that to mean no less than two weeks and no more than a month. Therefore, I reckon the breakfast show will start on either Monday 6th, 13 or 20th August.

  8. I know TMD_24 brought this up in the chatbox, but I thought it should have its own thread so we can put all the latest developments in one place.

Here's what I put in the chatbox:

    • Blimey, someone in the press really has it in for her. It seems a bit cruel, I bet they've been saving this up since the last scandal. Everybody's been immature and said bad things when they were younger, it's just for her it's been documented so people can hold it against her. My opinions on her as a radio presenter are quite clear, but as a person I have nothing against her and this seems to me to be a case of some nasty editor trying to trash her career because she's a young, female person of colour who's doing incredibly well for herself. It's unfair that "news" can now be manufactured by misrepresenting jokes made when people were a lot younger as their views now - although it was insanely stupid of her not to delete her old tweets after the last time.

I think Jordan12 is right, she won't survive this, especially after the controversy of their slow response last time. It would go down like a bucket of sick if Radio 1 stuck by her again this time, especially considering the tweets were arguably worse this time. It's not how I wanted her to go - being sacked for being a crap presenter is very different to being sacked for a tabloid stitch up. But if it means Jordan finally gets the airtime he deserves, I won't lose much sleep over it.

Don’t you think they’re just resting Chris Smith so it’s a bit fresher with him back with Greg for the all new show?

That would be good but I'm not sure how likely it is - if they want it to be fresher when he starts the new show, the might as well just give Greg two months off. But I hope this is true. Alternatively, maybe it's just a case of Newsbeat rotas or staff cuts meaning he's not free to spend as much time in the studio away from his proper job as he used to be, but if he's the breakfast newsreader that could free him up.

I'm currently listening back to an old Greg show from 2014, back when they had Chris Smith doing Rage with him every week instead of a guest, and god it was brilliant. Those two are brilliant together.

  10. After the initial excitement about the Greg James breakfast show, I'm doing some serious expectation management right now.

Chances are it won't be a total reversal of all the changes of the last six years. There'll still probably be the same amount of music as currently (at least to begin with), I have a terrible feeling Chris Smith won't be moved to breakfast (he's not on Shouldn't Be News again this week)... I haven't really got anything else to back it up, but it's just there at the back of my mind.

I don't know, maybe I'm just being pessimistic. But it's occurred to me that perhaps I shouldn't get too excited in case it turns out to be a disappointment. It'll still be better than Grimmy any day, but probably not the breakfast show us die hards have dreamed of since Moyles left.

Any one else got any thoughts?

  11. Also it's a source of great sadness that I'm from North West London and I don't know Chris. All of the places referenced in Tap End are relatively near to me. Maybe it's because he's more Metropolitan Line and I'm Jubilee.

  12. Yeah, this forum worked out that Chris and his gf had had a baby when it happened. What can I say, we're excellent stalkers. But I suppose it was never mentioned on air both for her privacy and also because they want to preserve Chris' image as a bit of a lad who's still having fun and finding his way in the world. Being settled with a kid doesn't really fit with that. But also it makes you seem older, and makes you less relatable to the target audience, most of whom won't have kids. Plus people talking about their kids is really boring. I'm kinda glad it's not mentioned on air, for all of the reasons above.

Matt's kid has been acknowledged once or twice - he had to miss a live episode of the Xtra Factor for her birth and they explained it live on air, and then he put a statement on his Twitter - he implied that he wasn't going to announce it publicly but they did it for him on the Xtra Factor so he felt obligated to say something. And I think then one of his guests on the radio show referenced it shortly after and he seemed a bit uncomfortable and moved on the conversation.

Back in the day I think Coxy, Jo Whiley and Edith might have talked about their kids a bit more, but it's probably harder to keep them a secret when they disappear from the airwaves for several months!

Oh, and did I mention - people talking about their kids is BORING.

Thanks! Seems like it's gone from their site now though, but at least I have a name! :hahaha:

Huh, that's weird. Maybe it's from a different library, but I can't remember which. I've got a copy though, I'll send it you when I've got a moment.
