  1. Looks like Tina's leaving breakfast... But is she moving to afternoons or leaving Radio 1 completely? If the former... WHAT ABOUT CHRIS SMITH????

    Where is that tweet then

Here although I'd prefix it by saying that the person who runs that account spent all afternoon hurling abuse at a journalist who reported Big Brother is going to be cancelled, so I might take it with a pinch (or tablespoon) of salt...

  2. Oh, Chris got married today by the way. A couple of wedding Instagram stories. We probably should've sent a card. Oh well. There's always next wedding.

Also I'm fully caught up with last week's show and Thursday's show was so lovely. A touching celebration of Chris, it was great, especially Scott's tribute at the end. If you missed it, it's worth a listen back because they played out a few classic clips of his best moments - including Beccy!

I have a feeling that Jordan on at 4 might be a mistake. At the end of his show today, he said he’s back at 1 tomorrow and it wouldn’t really make sense for Will to do every day this week apart from Friday. And Adele has actually been on this week so wouldn’t make much sense for her to have tomorrow off.

It might be Adele but if it's Will Best then even Will Best doesn't know it - I was listening this morning and he said several times it was his last show in this stint of cover. He had quite a lengthy conversation about it with Luciano, in fact. Don't think Adele said when she'd be back at the end of her show today.

  4. Not sure whether it's been pointed out yet but Jordan's on twice tomorrow - he's doing 4-6am and then 1-4pm with Molly King (as he is all weekend).

And professional Adele Roberts soundalike Katie Thisleton is in for Maya on Friday but not Saturday.

I also think we'll get 3 weeks of Scott on Breakfast which leads me into my next question; will Scott use his breakfast package which is basically Grimmys but with the name changed to Scott's or will he just use his generic afternoon jingles, like when he covered between Moyles and Grimmy and milk it being the "shortest breakfast show ever" except if this is longer than five shows it won't have been

I reckon he will, because the circumstances are different - first of all because it will be slightly more long term than in 2012, but also because in 2012, "The Radio 1 Breakfast Show" didn't exist - it had been "The Chris Moyles Show" for the 8 1/2 years previous, so Scott HAD to use his own jingles because there simply weren't any generic breakfast jingles with his name on them, only "The Chris Moyles Show with Scott Mills" jingles (Scott also did the same the last time he covered for Chris, when the show was wrapping up IIRC). This time, it's still The Radio 1 Breakfast Show, the only thing that's changing is Nick Grimshaw is being swapped for Greg James. So my guess is that in the interim Scott will use his existing Radio 1 Breakfast Show jingles (but maybe have some new ones for when/if he covers Greg).

Neither was I. I love that song and thought it would be the type of thing that he’d  like as well.

The first time it came around, he even had a bit of fun with it and got people to ask questions for which the answer was "I will leave a light on". Although maybe he was taking the piss all along!

Annoyingly I missed the show live so I'm listening back on iPlayer now, I'm nearly done, so some thoughts.

The chat with Chris Smith and Mayor of Where was great, I'm so glad they had a proper last chat and talked about their relationship. I noticed Greg specifically said "we are being separated". So that confirms that then. But it was so lovely to hear them reminiscing.

The Ten Minute Takeover was great as well, I did wonder whether it was fixed though - the first song, You and Me Song by The Wannadies is just a bit emosh, Language by Porter Robinson was his opening bed for about two years and End Credits by Chase and Status used to be the music used for the montage of that day's show he used to play at about 18:55 for the first year or so of drivetime. Coincidence or what.

The highlights montage was great as well. It's a shame for Greg's show that Grace isn't moving with him, although his loss is Scott's gain and hopefully we'll be hearing a lot of her on-air with him and Chris. And obviously the loss  of Chris Smith is a tragedy. I don't want to form an opinion on the new breakfast show before it's even started, and I'm sure whatever happens I'll like it a lot (or at least more than Grimmy's tenure) but it seems as if he's being set up to fail by not keeping his team in place. When Moyles moved from afternoons to breakfast, his core team was kept - him, Dave, Rachel and Aled. Only Georgina Bowman and David Garrido didn't move and they weren't really a part of the show outside of news bulletins. So breaking up the team is undoubtedly a mistake. But we'll see how it goes. Maybe I'm just in denial but I don't think we've seen the last of Greg and Chris on-air together - even if it's just occasional cover.

I remember reading this forum six years ago when the schedule changes were announced. I wasn't a member then, and I don't think any of the regular posters from that time are still around, but back then the forum understandably wasn't happy about Mills being taken off drivetime. Six years on, I think it was for the best - he's lasted way longer on Radio 1 than anyone would've expected back then whilst had he stayed on drive he might not have. And Greg's show was more than a worthy successor. I can't believe I've been listening to Radio 1 that long though - I was in year 8 when Greg started drivetime and I remember coming home to hear his first show, and now I've finished my first year at uni. Wow.

It's why I want Real Or No Real back! (Scott, Chris and Greg laughing about Bruce Forsyth being older than cubed ice , etc.)

I wish I could remember when those shows were, the Bruce Forsyth facts were the best, I laughed so much. Even now I can hear Scott and Greg saying "I'm older than ice" and "I'm the first person on TV".

  8. And then Jordan's filling in for Matt all weekend too! He's a busy boy. And Adele's on all next weekend too - back on earlies on Friday, Dance Anthems on Saturday and weekend breakfast on Sunday. The schedule for Monday week isn't up yet, so we don't know who's on drive that week.

Btw, how do have all of these vintage shows, OohErr? I’d be lying if I said I wasnt very jealous hahaha

I get access to a thing through uni which has basically every BBC show from 2007 onwards and possibly stuff from other channels too. It is bloody brilliant, I'm fully taking advantage, although you're not really supposed to be able to download stuff...

OMO the playlist sounded a lot better back then - more pop and indie and less 1xtra grime and rap type stuff.

Agreed. That's probably not so much a problem with the playlist than the way the charts have changed over the last six years. Back in 2007/08 there was a tonne of indie rock on the playlist because it was in the Top 40. Almost unimaginable now.

  10. Greg was just on with Grimmy teasing something exciting and mysterious they have planned for 4pm today, but they wouldn't say what it is and said only them and their producers knew about it.

How exciting. I wonder what it could be. Marathon show? If they started today at 4 and finished Thursday at 8 or so they'd equal or beat Moyles' record.

EDIT: I've just listened back to the announcement, they said it had never been done before. So probably not a marathon show. I'm so excited to find out what it is. Roll on four o'clock!

I'm not good with changes and all these features that Greg's going to bring back this week just make me quite weepy.

I love listening to R1 in the afternoons, both Scott and Greg make all the woes of the day disappear with their kindness and silliness. I know that Breakfast Show is massive and Greg deserves doing it, but at the same time, can't help but feeling quite sad. I won't be able to listen to Greg everyday, as I am now. And not having Chris Smith 'with the news' on with Greg isn't helping at all. So it's all really bittersweet for me.

That's true, it was a great show that had an amazing run. There's always catch-up and the podcast. And if you really miss the old show, there's a few on www.radio1archive.blogspot.com and I'll keep adding more when I have time.

  12. Seeing as we will soon be in-between breakfast shows once again, I thought we could take a look back at the last time this was the case - and Scott Mills brought us Radio 1's shortest running breakfast show ever!

They're a really good listen, but it really shows how much Radio 1 changed post-2012. Compared to Moyles who finished the previous week, Scott played A LOT of music, but by today's standards it really wasn't that much. The whole thing sounds a lot freer and less formatted than it does today.

But the first show especially makes you realise how weird and unprecedented it was for Chris Moyles to not be doing the breakfast show for the first time in many people's listening memory (including mine).

Have a listen to some/all of them and share your thoughts here!

N.B. This was also the point at which Chris used to stay in a youth hostel near Radio 1 :D

  13. It's a really revealing article actually. It's behind a paywall but I'll put the key points here.

    • He parrotted the same line about listening figures and social media engagement Ben Cooper likes to use after every bad RAJAR but a bit more strongly - he said RAJARs are "almost meaningless"

    • He signed a new contract last September which was the point when Ben Cooper asked him when he wanted to leave the breakfast show and Grimmy picked the time after he'd passed Tony Blackburn

    • A standout memory is the show after the Manchester Arena bombing and having to guide people through it

    • Other personal highlights consist entirely of guests - Harry Styles after the BRITs, Stormzy bringing in 20 pizzas and Alan Carr

    • He thinks it's silly and fake to not namedrop the people you've been hanging out with

    • He thought Angelina Jolie was cold and Will Smith was fake-nice and patronising to off-air staff but Kim Kardashian was surprisingly genuine

    • He's never had a boyfriend but would like to try and get one now he'll have more time

    • He wants to become a set designer in the future - he designed the Royal Academy's Christmas tree last year, did an internship at a set design company (Es Devlin) and is starting a set design course at Central Saint Martin's art school in September (I had no idea about any of this and it's really interesting)
