Greg James threw himself into today’s Ask The Nation with real relish, declaring “I’m actually ready for a fight” before taking calls from listener Hailey, whose vet kissed her cat Bellamy on the head during a check-up. Vets and vet nurses queued up on the phone to weigh in, including one who admitted “it is a bit weird to be kissing the patients on the head… especially in front of the owner”, while another confessed to spending ten minutes kissing a whippet the day before. Greg revealed 72% of BBC Sounds voters came down in favour of a cheeky kiss, prompting a flurry of texts from listeners saying they’d now be offended if their own vet didn’t plant one on their pet.

There was a genuine broadcasting moment too, as Radio 1 gave the first play to Fontaines D.C.’s new single Where Is Gone, their first ever collaboration with another artist, featuring Rosalía. Jack Saunders had spoken to the band at what Greg jokingly called a “secret location” in North London, with the band explaining they’d been “a little bit scared to ask” Rosalía before she agreed to feature.

Joe Lycett provided the laugh of the morning during the news round-up, pitching a cut-price version of The Graham Norton Show using “a Graham Norton I found on Facebook… he’s got 49 friends”, populated by guests who share names with celebrities, like Anton Deckman standing in for Anton Du Beke.

Greg also thanked Danny Mylo and Rosie Madison for covering part of Monday’s show after he arrived late, with their stand-in quiz score of 10 points for Eve the RE teacher later topped up to 11 following a listener’s recount request.
