16 May 2016: Scott returns from Eurovision with a problem about “Scotty”

Eleven Scotties

Scott returned after a week in Stockholm, bringing Swedish sweets and stories from presenting the Eurovision semi-finals with Mel Giedroyc. Chris had reviewed both broadcasts and counted every time Mel addressed him by name.

Of 14 uses, 11 were “Scotty”. Scott admitted the first few had bothered him, but he became used to what he called a “Melism”, her habit of shortening some words and lengthening others. The issue became more awkward when a friend told Mel about the discussion and she challenged him on air. They had since settled it, and Scott decided “Scotty” was still preferable to Michael McIntyre calling him “Millsy”.

Chris also suspected ITV’s Play to the Whistle of borrowing Library Tennis. Its game used escalating grunts, although Scott stopped short of directly accusing his friend Seann Walsh of taking the idea.

Photos liked by your boyfriend

While Scott was away, Chris had revealed that Facebook searches could display photographs liked by a named person. He intended it as a warning to people who casually liked pictures of ex-partners, but listeners immediately used it to investigate current boyfriends and girlfriends.

One caller said the search had damaged an already fragile relationship after revealing likes on an ex’s photographs. Another was relieved to find nothing worrying while her boyfriend was away at naval training. Scott accepted the value of the discovery but disliked Chris demonstrating it with his own name.

Sixty-five hours with Scott and Chris

A listener had worked through all 20 full programmes then available on BBC iPlayer, amounting to 65 hours in two weeks. She now felt like a friend of the show and had learned that laughing at Library Tennis made quiet study almost impossible.

The regular competition returned as Chris chose DJ Fresh’s “Louder” against Scott’s post-Eurovision selection, Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything”. The listener decisively chose Chris, leaving Scott unable to turn his Swedish return into a Battle of the Bangers victory. Greg James then won Real or No Real by 20 points to 10.
