3 May 2016: Joe and Jake prepare for Eurovision with Innuendo Bingo

From The Voice to Stockholm

Joe Woolford and Jake Shakeshaft joined the show shortly before travelling to Stockholm as the United Kingdom’s Eurovision entrants. Since winning the national selection, they had been rehearsing, attending events and completing demanding workouts, although neither confirmed Scott’s suspicion that their shirts would come off during “You’re Not Alone”.

They admitted that performing for a possible 200 million viewers was daunting, but said the preparation had made them feel ready. Listeners responded warmly to the song, comparing it with One Direction and calling it the strongest British entry for several years.

The pair then faced Chris together in Innuendo Bingo. Their familiarity with the game did not protect them from clips involving the Hairy Bikers, Phil Spencer and the previous year’s Eurovision act Electro Velvet. Both left soaked but still able to continue their rehearsals.

The song with no name

Listener Nick had heard a dance track on Radio 1 but could remember only a short wordless melody. He sang the same few notes repeatedly while listeners suggested possible answers, none of which he recognised.

Scott expected the problem to be solved quickly but became as frustrated as Nick when every plausible track failed. With the tune now lodged in the entire show’s head, he promised to continue the search the following day rather than allow everyone another sleepless night.

A football photograph

Scott had DJed at a football awards event and found himself seated close to Dele Alli. He first took a discreet photograph of the back of the player’s head, then eventually asked for a proper picture to send to Chris. Chris compared seeing them together with discovering an ex beside an old friend: there was no genuine problem, but the image still felt strangely unsettling.

Charlie Sloth returned for Real or No Real, with the show’s familiar Alan Dedicoat substitution following him throughout the introduction. Battle of the Bangers also resumed in the afternoon slot, underlining that Breakfast cover was over even as Eurovision was about to take Scott away again.
