Who Friday comes to the radio
Scott had tried to establish “Who Friday” on Instagram by posting photographs with people who had slipped from view. He turned it into a phone game in which a mystery guest answered questions until Scott and Chris could identify them.
The caller had appeared on The X Factor, released one hit internationally and had a twin sister. The clue that the song began with “one” finally revealed Muhammad Shahid Nazir, the One Pound Fish Man, who immediately performed his famous market song.
Nazir announced that he was preparing a tribute to Michael Jackson and sang part of it live. Scott regarded the entire encounter as the kind of booking possible only on a Friday and asked for the finished song to be sent to Radio 1.
Partners kept away from friends
The hidden-girlfriend story produced callers whose friends had been in long relationships without ever introducing their partners. One group had seen the woman only from a car before their friend hurried her away, leading them to wonder whether he had created a separate set of friends to support stories he had told her.
Another listener discovered that her boyfriend had claimed other artists’ paintings as his own. He eventually confessed and the relationship survived, removing at least one reason for him to keep her away from people who knew the truth.
Chris’s fictional band returned as the defining example. At the start of his relationship he had downloaded a local group’s track, played it to his girlfriend and claimed that his voice could be heard in the background.
Fearne has nothing left to lose
With one week remaining before Fearne Cotton left Radio 1, Scott invited her to confirm or deny stories collected across nearly ten years. She admitted that during less engaging performances she had shopped online, and that she had also completed her weekly grocery order during the programme.
Fearne really had gone alone to Elton John’s Las Vegas show while already in the city for work. Unable to find anybody to accompany her, she bought a very large gin and tonic, stood among the crowd and considered it one of the best nights of her life.
She had also appeared with Shane Richie in the video for his 2003 Children in Need cover of “I’m Your Man”, wearing a Hawaiian-style bikini, and kept letters from Princes William and Harry alongside a photograph with the Queen in her bathroom.
The special gave Scott the honest answers he wanted and left him thinking about his own eventual final programme. He requested Pitbull as the last guest and “Timber” as the song listeners should use to remember him, prompting immediate messages that the audience would simply refuse to let him leave.
