Gabrielle Aplin returns with important advert news
Gabrielle Aplin returned after first reaching the programme through BBC Introducing and her song “Home”. During her previous visit, she had helped Scott demonstrate the advertising formula of slowing down a rock song, placing it over a piano and adding a delicate female vocal. Their examples had included System of a Down’s “Chop Suey!”, imagined as the soundtrack to an advert for warming soup.
Scott therefore felt entitled to take some credit for Gabrielle’s new recording of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”. Her version had been chosen for the John Lewis Christmas advert, although she confirmed that none of the songs improvised on her earlier visit had made the cut.
Gabrielle had cried in a different supermarket when she learned she had secured the campaign. The advert was due to receive its first television showing during Derren Brown’s programme that evening, and she was excited by a placement which could introduce the song to a very large audience.
The team played the track, with Scott insisting that the original’s line about protecting somebody from the “hooded claw” and keeping vampires from the door should have remained. Gabrielle performed the first line live before declining to continue, leaving Chris to complete it. Listener reaction was immediately enthusiastic, and one message offered to marry her voice.
Her repeated nicknames had meanwhile developed from Gabs to Bags and then Sack. Listeners added suggestions including “taxi Gab” and “Golden Gabbler”, while Gabrielle accepted that the process was unlikely to stop. She also clarified that she wanted a onesie which made her look like a ferret, not a onesie for her pet ferret.
Chris confuses Twilight with Only Fools and Horses
Nick Grimshaw was offering listeners the chance to meet Robert Pattinson by recreating a scene from a Twilight film in a one-minute video. Scott believed he could enter and considered filming an entry with Susan Boyle or Katy Perry, despite once oversleeping when Pattinson had been waiting for him at a hotel.
Asked to name a favourite scene, Chris described the sequence in which two characters obtained jobs cleaning chandeliers, unscrewed the wrong fitting and caused it to fall. He was thinking of Only Fools and Horses. His alternative suggestion, involving Batman and Robin at a fancy-dress party, came from the same sitcom rather than the vampire films.
Scott nevertheless planned to ask Katy Perry to film a scene with him when they appeared together on the National Lottery programme the following day. Gabrielle wanted to meet Susan Boyle and arm-wrestle her, even though Scott predicted that they would probably argue.
Unusual ways to earn Christmas money
The team searched classified adverts for part-time jobs which might provide extra money before Christmas. One naturist offered £12.50 an hour for a cleaner willing to work while the employer walked around the house naked. A separate advertiser offered to clean while naked, creating what appeared to be a perfect match.
Another person needed a beard mentor who could provide professional styling advice and submit a résumé with photographs of previous achievements. His facial hair needed to reach the next level or be shaved off before it cost him a job in adult day care.
A parent had accidentally booked a lion and monkey attraction in Miami for a child’s birthday and now urgently needed somebody local who could bring a monkey instead. Chris also considered becoming a topless butler, believing his politeness and table-service skills might compensate for not matching the physique shown in the promotional photographs. Scott explained that customers were unlikely to be judging the butlers principally on their ability to wait tables.
Real or No Real
Rolf Harris had not survived six months lost in the Australian outback with the help of a family of koalas. The Twilight series really had been rejected by 14 publishers, and it genuinely was impossible for somebody to tickle themselves.
