Tom Daley becomes One Direction’s sixth member
Evie from Portsmouth introduced the show with the claim that she had met all six members of One Direction. Her father worked for ITV and had taken her backstage during the 2010 series of The X Factor, where he spotted Tom Daley and assumed he was another member of the group. He congratulated the increasingly confused diver on the band’s songs and performances while Evie and her sister tried unsuccessfully to stop him.
Sarah-Jane Crawford from 1Xtra faced Chris in Innuendo Bingo. Springwatch supplied demands to “get off my nuts” and the observation that a cliff had once been “a great place for shags”, while Home and Away, Radio 2 and a strongman documentary added more clips. Sarah-Jane’s enthusiasm overcame her concern that traces of tomato soup might accompany the water, and both players ended the game thoroughly drenched.
Dear Scott brought a long-distance breakup accidentally soundtracked by a television music channel. Songs including Somebody That I Used to Know, Someone Like You and If You Leave Me Now played as the couple discussed separating, leading the team to recommend lyric-free music for any future breakup. Another listener said Chris sounded like ideal boyfriend material until she saw him, at which point she decided he would be better as a football-and-beer friend.
Professor Green joined Scott to discuss his television habits, his relationship with Millie Mackintosh and his appearance on a cookery programme. He was preparing to perform at Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend in the area where he had grown up, including the appropriately local opening of Jungle. He also backed the Hackney Academy’s effort to show young people the many routes into music and media work.
The programme examined why competitions promising a date with a celebrity often produced an awkward evening, including one listener’s uncomfortable meeting with Blazin’ Squad. In Oh, What’s Occurring?, 1Xtra’s DJ Visi joined Chris to count repeated mentions of “sea trout” on Saturday Kitchen. They then heard the many ways BBC coverage of the wet Jubilee insisted that the weather had not “dampened their spirits”, bringing the show’s own extended Jubilee week to a suitably repetitive close.
