18 May 2012: Grimmy makes “Toilet Girl” trend worldwide

Grimmy makes “Toilet Girl” trend worldwide

With Scott away in Azerbaijan for Eurovision, Grimmy joined Chris for the Friday show. They compared themselves to a hastily assembled daytime-TV partnership, although it soon became clear that their main shared ambition was to make an unfortunate listener famous for a toilet accident.

Amy introduced the programme with the story of how she had slammed a cubicle door at school and brought down the whole row. Her cousin was caught in the chaos, around 20 people came to investigate, and Grimmy decided that “Toilet Girl” was the only possible nickname.

What began as a throwaway hashtag became a very determined campaign. Grimmy, Chris and Radio 1 tried to push #ToiletGirl online, tested alternatives including “Bog Babe”, and eventually got help from Harry Styles, Diana Vickers and other well-connected supporters.

The result was genuinely bizarre: #ToiletGirl appeared in the worldwide trends. Grimmy delighted in the achievement while admitting that people encountering Harry’s tweet without the programme’s context would understandably be confused.

Elsewhere, Dear Grimmy took the place of Dear Scott, including a request to pass a message to Malta’s Eurovision drummer via Scott. The show embraced its temporary presenter switch, but the day belonged to Amy, whose broken cubicle door unexpectedly became international radio content.
