Liam Payne reassures One Direction fans from New York
The show started with listener Sam’s grisly nightclub story. A dried blowfish hanging from the ceiling of a Hawaiian-themed venue had struck her in the face, leaving what she believed was still a small piece of fish lodged high in her nose, a detail Scott found almost impossible to hear.
Scott then became invested in San Marino’s Eurovision problem. Its entry, Valentina Monetta’s song The Social Network Song, mentioned Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg, apparently breaking the contest rule against commercial messages. The team offered their own Mile High Club as a commercial-reference-free replacement.
The centrepiece was a call to Liam Payne in New York, where One Direction had just become the first British group to debut at number one in the US. Liam was still taking in the scale of the achievement and credited the fans who had helped build their audience online before the group had even arrived in America.
Scott pressed him on the anxiety felt by some UK fans as the band toured overseas. Liam replied that the British fans were the best, said the group wanted to come home, and promised they had not forgotten the people who supported them from the start, while also noting that they had an Australian tour ahead.
The interview ended with the pressing practical questions of hotel kettles, ice machines and American sweets. Scott jokingly cast himself as a peace broker between One Direction and worried British fans, pleased that Liam’s reassurance had given the programme its own tiny “Mills Accord of 2012”.
