12 March 2012: Chris pays for the world’s hottest chilli

Listener John introduced the programme with the admission that, as a child, he had gone down a friend’s garden zip wire naked for 60p. Scott was struck by the fact that John’s parents were waiting at the bottom, and by how little money it had taken to persuade him.

The main story was the aftermath of Chris’s chilli-eating challenge with science presenter Greg Foot. Chris had chewed one of the hottest chillies legally available in the UK after deciding the resulting video would impress his mates.

By the following day, that confidence had disappeared. Chris phoned in to say that everything was burning, he could not sit down and his nose would not stop running, while Scott enjoyed the fact that the science suggested the second day could be worse than the first.

The team replayed highlights of the challenge, including Greg’s explanation that chilli heat tricks the brain into believing it is in pain and dangerously hot. Beccy had sensibly dropped out early, leaving Chris to take the full consequences of trying to prove he could manage it.

The show closed the week by directing listeners to the video and the podcast, but Chris’s punishment was the real advertisement. His determination to make an impressive clip had produced exactly the result Scott wanted: an extended, highly publicised panic about a vegetable.
