13 March 2012: Chris hangs up on Pixie Lott’s birthday call

Listener Lisa opened the programme with an unlikely Kings of Leon injury claim. She had been hit on the head by one of Caleb Followill’s guitars at a concert, but the episode had ultimately earned her T-shirts, a plectrum and drumsticks rather than a call to a solicitor.

It was Chris Stark’s 25th birthday, and Scott had tried to organise a suitably impressive set of messages. The first effort involved old clips in which celebrities had wished Charlie XCX a happy birthday, allowing Scott to recycle “Happy birthday, Chris” from the likes of Richard Madeley and Katie Price while Chris tried to work out what was happening.

The real surprise was a live call from Pixie Lott. Scott had told her that Chris was a fan, remembered meeting her and had even bought the same aftershave she had complimented, but he kept the call secret so that it would be a genuine birthday surprise.

Chris answered with a wary “Who’s this now?”, heard Pixie say she hoped they would meet soon, and promptly replied: “Leave me alone.” When Scott replayed the call, Chris was horrified to discover that it had not been another fabricated birthday message and started trying to repair the damage on air.

The rest of the programme let him enjoy the embarrassment rather than escape it. What had begun as a birthday treat became an all-time Chris moment, with Scott delighted that months of planning had lasted only seconds before being undone by his friend’s instinctive suspicion of an unknown caller.
